US soldiers in Iraq approach a car after opening fire when it failed to stop at a checkpoint. Despite warning shots it continued to drive towards their dusk patrol in Tal Afar on 18 January.

At the checkpoint a US soldier examines the car.
A US military statement said troops trying to stop the car used hand signals and fired warning shots before firing directly at the car, killing the driver and front seat passenger.

I wonder what the "warnings" were to that family. There are no words....

1. "warning shots"

Maybe someone who knows more about this than I do can explain this to me but how exactly would someone differentiate the sound of "warning shots" from the sound of any other shots being fired in Iraq? It would seem to me that the sound of guns and bombs is, sadly, all to common to people over there these days. I don't know that I'd know "warning" shots if I heard them.
