Recall vote/GOP crowd runs anti-United Nations ad.

A few days ago I saw an ad from Move America Forward on CNN. Those of you who haven't seen it can behold it in all its disgusting, mendacious, malicious glory at the link below:

For those of you who haven't seen it, the ad attacks Jan Egelund, the U.N. coordinator for humanitarian relief who commented on the giving levels of wealthy nations following the December 26th tsunami. There's also an attack on Kofi Annan, a suggestion that he simply went on vacationing after the tragedy. But we all know that Kofi Annan came back to work while someone else remained on vacation in Crawford, Texas.

There's more. The crowd running this ad is strongly connected to the Republican Party, the right-wing media, and specifically to the California recall election. Look at the list:

Note also the links they provide for right-wing media, including racist Michael Savage.

I urge other DUers to be ready to counter and unmask this lot. They were able to pull off a recall, and they think they can pull a similar stunt with the U.N.

1. A Jehovah's Witness recently told me

he believed the UN would eventually turn against the church. Two of them turned up on my doorstep; wish I had a goat in the house to freak them out. Stereotype Rapturista (another poster's term). Perfectly capable of horrific intolerance if they ever got into a position of authority imho.

I'm not knocking Christians per se. However,the fundie crowd scare the shit out of me and the links with the r/w even more.

6. Well, it's more libel than slander, as it was broadcast...

They made the claim that Kofi Annan wouldn't cut short his vacation to help with tsunami efforts. However, if I recall the news reports correctly, Annan did indeed break off his vacation, as did several other leaders (European heads of state, etc.), when the tsunami crisis hit. It was George W. Bush who remained in the brush at Crawford!

As for that footage of the skier, it has a tiny clarification (something like "dramatization") which runs at the bottom.

But it's the fact that it's the crowd who worked for Alfonse D'Amato, right-wing radio, and the California recall effort that burns me up. Remember when the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth outfit turned out to have Nixon shills and McCain smearers as part of their seamy little operation?

3. Immigration Is Tied Into This As Well

Seems like that noise has been wratcheted up in recent weeks. This Chinese/Mexican/Boston story/non-story is a prime example.

The BFEE fears the U.N., as do the neo-cons, as they are one of the few organizations that can stand up against them, thus, like other opponents, they must be dehumanized and either destroyed or minimalized. The wingnuts have been on a tear for months to find something/anything on Annan and others; only to see it backfire internationally. The more this regime tries to tear down the U.N., the greater credibility it gives the U.N. worldwide.

I'm no fan of how the U.N. has operated (especially during the 70's and early 80's), but the right wing has never liked international laws...from the League of Nations to the present day.

Don't expect our media, that is bought and paid for by corporations, to unmask anything that either compromises their money or power...and the truth about this regime does both.

4. I saw it. It showed sombody skiing downhill and claimed it was Annan

Pretty stupid. Not at all eye catching. At first I wasn't even sure what it was. And then it seemed strange as in the election is over what is this thing doing on.

On the whole, whatever they spent, they wasted a lot of money doing it. Why would they play it in Michigan? No idea on that unless it was to somehow influence the Islamist's.

Like I said, boring ad.
