Last week I purchased a burger for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register.

I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help.

While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried.

By the by this is a true story, I do demos of Roleplaying and miniature gamse and once I did it at a school (free hint it is 49th out of 48), and the ninth grader looked at me very confused when I asked, what is 20 - 9? He just stood there, and reached for the calculator.

No, I don't care how long it takes you, take out a piece of paper and pencil, and DO IT!

Teacher was not pleased.. student was POed... but a Ninth Grader cannot do that basic math, we are in trouble.

I have a girl just out of high school I hired. I was teaching basic cash handling and tried to explain "counting back" the change

"So if they give you a $10, you start with the amount of the purchase, $2.75, grab a quarter makes $3, 2 ones makes $5 and a $5 bill is ten, right?"

she just looked at me like i was speaking a foreign language, it took her DAYS to get the basic concept of counting back change. :shrug:

15. A month or so ago

I went into some establishment and took my purchase to the register "womanned" by a teenage girl. (I always cringe when I see that set up.) But, by darn, she counted back change to me. I was floored and told her so. And then said thank you.

18. I went to public schools in the 70s/80s...

My mom must have known the school wasn't teaching some of the basics, so she bought some play money (including coins) from the dollar store, set up her adding machine as a cash register, took food (with price tags on it) from the pantry and had us kids play "store cashier" until we could do it easily. We had a lot of fun doing it, too.

So in effect, my mom taught me to count back change, or else I might never have learned it. This e-mail made me think of that this morning. Fun memory, and who knew my mom was a part-time homeschooler? ;-)

14. Whenever I work in retail (usually in the summer)...

I end up teaching all of the kids there to count back change. Adults often remark, " I can't remember the last time someone counted my change back, thank you" The kids are always impressed by this (I'm not sure why). To me it is a matter of being courteous but boy I'm getting really good at teaching this.
