I work in market research and 90% of my contacts are with Americans. There is an affinity I feel with most Americans I talk with.
They seem to be cool (dare i say even curious) with talking to a Canadian, they ask me questions about what it's like to live here, about our health care, and I've even had inquiries from a few in CT and NY State as to how to go about moving here post Nov. 2004.
At the risk of getting chewed out by my superiors at work, I pointed them to web resources to answer their questions (after the research study was finished of course). Hey that's what good neighbours do, right?
All in all, I'd say most Americans have affection or indifference towards Canada.
There is, however, a palpable hatred of Canada (and anything "foreign" ) I sense from a small number of my contacts.
Some have started yelling in what I can only guess was an attempt at French, others have called Canadians bastards who turned their back on the US during the Iraq Invasion.

Pure, blind, unreasoned hate based on political ideologies and not objective facts or a shared (mostly peaceful) history of cooperation between our nations.
And Carlson's dead wrong. Bush is widely mistrusted and disliked here. I've never ridden a dogsled in my life.

they are, without a doubt, some of the MOST hateful people we have ever met. It's not just the paid pundits, it's also the right wing "preachers" who spout just as much hate.

I'm very sorry. Most of us are quite well behaved and ashamed that our country is being led by a bunch of far, far, far right extremists who will lead us into a depression, while they continue to reap profits off their illegal wars.

Fortunately they tend to gather in western Canada.
Down east (my neck of the woods) they stick out like a sore thumb and have yet to make any political headway what-so-ever.

when Ann Coulter made the comment about the U.S. allowing Canada to exist.

Coulter makes these outrageous comments with a smirk on her face as if to say, "I'm only kidding", although I have never heard her take back any of her comments. I don't think that she is "kidding" when she says things like we should nuke North Korea, I think she is one hundred percent serious. Loony comments like that got her fired from the National Review.

If Coulter was a isolated nut job that wouldn't be too bad. What's bad is that Freeper types love her to death and hang on her every word. So Coulter is fairly representative of a big segment of the population. That's scary.
