as someone who went from Charlie Wilson's volunteer staff, to Jake Pickle's, to Jerry Brown's, and not rejoined any camp since 1992, I've alienated more than a small percentage of the working field - hell, just review my posts throughout my history here; I'm a thoroughly square peg. My own prospects in the arena spiraled out long ago.
If experience has taught me anything, however, it's to recognize talent where it exists, and to predict the way the ripples will traverse when something of consequence impacts the pool, as this most certainly did. The reaction of your opponent confirmed this to me, and doubtlessly to many others.
I guarantee you - guarantee you - that if this performance were to be linked from the front page of DU tomorrow, as it should be, it would be viewed, more than once, by every single camp in the entire national political field. Karl Rove himself would see it, and immediately task a subgroup to formulate responses to each specific statement. All of the Presidential contenders - all of them. I would predict feelers from the Kerry camp by week's end, and would not be surprised if they had already arrived.
I'm inclined to cite a wonderful quote from the brilliant Leisuretown online comic, "Q.A. Confidential."
"Consider your position in the universe. All that cold, dark space extending outward & away from you forever in every direction. ANY point might be the absolute center. Maybe it's you."
Finally, one more bit of unsolicited suggestion, likely one you don't need: Drill, drill, drill. Three moves ahead. Your opponent's reaction was priceless, in more ways than one. If you can command a debate as ably as tonight, and do so consistently, there is nobody in the field today that could touch you. The closest would be Limbaugh, and keep in mind, he does not debate. In a reasoned confrontation, he collapses. On the Democratic side, the closest would have been Stephanapolous and Carville, but their stars have long since faded, and they were only ever about sound bites anyway.
Sorry so long, I'm finishing a second glass of wine. I'm glad to have bolstered your confidence, although from the looks of it tonight, I doubt this would have been at all necessary.
Please forward this post, and others I have made tonight that you happen across, to the administrators, along with my request/suggestion to have your videos posted on the front page. Really, this needs to happen.
