How could Condi Rice and everyone else seem to forget Samuel Byck?

The History channel is promoting an upcoming special entitled, The Plot to Kill Nixon. There is also an upcoming film called The Assassination of Richard Nixon, starring Sean Penn. It's a true story based on Samuel Bicke's attempt to hijack an airliner in 1974 and crash it into the White House.

My point is this - following 9/11, our government repeatedly told us that they never conceived of the idea of someone using an airplane as a weapon (nevermind the nut who tried to crash a single engine plane into Clinton's White House). But that's obviously not the case - would the CIA or FBI or Secret Service really forget this incident? Certainly our government didn't need 9/11 to prove that it could be done.

4. On 9/11 or just after Wm. Cohen was on ABC saying he was worried about it

I don't mean this as a condemnation but Cohen was on ABC and said that every time he went into the world trade center he worried about a plane crashing into it (not necessarily hijacked).

The engineering review that I saw on Discovery Channel centered on the mistakes made in engineering (too much untreated drywall around the main structure) but that a plane crashing into it WAS considered and planned for.

But yet off they went with their "Hey look we really didn't pay much attention to any of this to tell you the truth...hold it sorry I just got this from the focus group NO ONE EVER THOUGHT A PLANE COULD BE USED AS A WEAPON!!!"

2. I watched it last night

Another interesting tidbit: During WWII, they reinforced the outer walls of the White House because they were worried about a Japanese kamikaze attack.

Yes, Condi was either lying or dangerously ignorant.

6. I was just sitting their shaking my head at this

First off Byck was very unstable (that's the nice way of putting it). It was amazing how close he got and, as the psychologist said at the end, how poorly he planned-he shot the security guard? He never considered that?

Second that part about reinforcing the White House was news to me and (still shaking my head) (giggling now) oh my God no one ever mention this on any TV show I had seen.

Lastly-a guy buzzed the White House THE WEEK BEFORE with a helicopter!!!

Must not have gotten much national media play, given all the other stuff that was going on. And that soldier who 'attacked' the White House with a Huey? Never heard a word about it back then (we're in the midwest).

In fact, when I first saw the title, 'the plot to kill Nixon', I assumed they were going to talk about Artie Bremer.

thank God Sam Byck did not get to kill that rat Nixon. If he had, we never would have removed him from office in disgrace, and for the crook that he really was.

Byck went to the same high school (not the same year) as my hubby and maybe lived in the same Phili neighborhood. To attend that high school, you had to be from the same neighborhood. My hubby was shocked to learn this about Byck, and shocked to know that there was ever a plot to kill Nixon. The guy was only 5 minutes, by jet, from the White House.

A lot of people were not doing their jobs ! It does not matter whether it was Dem, Republic or I don't belong to any party. The media did not do their jobs and a lot of folks on both sides of the aisle have been cya a long time. I am not buying that back in 2000 when all the congress said that they did not know of an emergency government was in place. You bet they knew. It is We the People as a whole did not have a clue but I did. I was told in eighties this was in force. So if little ole me a little old nobody knew ...why did our legislators not know of what C-Span calls The Shadow Government in case of disaster.
