The image you see here might lead you to believe that the child in the picture has been made "glad" and secure thanks to the U.S. troop presence in Iraq. As "El Gringo" discovered, however, Lindy Eddy doctored the photograph. The original photo, taken by a journalist, depicted a young girl who had just received bullet wounds during a firefight in which her mother was killed and her father was wounded. Eddy doctored the photo by erasing the little girl's own face (which carries the listless expression you would expect from an injured child) and replacing it with someone else's face to make her look positively radiant and adoring.

the 100,000 to 200,000 from Lancet is the most accurate scientific analysis of the death toll to date, and that's 100,000 to 200,000 more than would have been killed by Saddam, not total.

The oft quoted 15,000 to 20,000 is just the sum of the number reported by western media.

Which, as any reasonably intelligent person would point out, is obviously erroneous.

1) You say the 100,000 is an exaggeration. So could the half-million you quote be an extreme exaggeration too?

2) We've been in Iraq for less than 2 years and have killed 100,000. Saddam ruled for 30 years and he killed a half million. Looks to me like we'll pass him in less than a third of the time he took for his murders.

3) When we begin trying to make ourselves look good by comparing ourselves to Hussein, we've lost. The right wing says he was the new Hitler, and we say "well at least we're not as bad as him." We've lost, if this is the comparison.

But when you add up what we've done directly or indirectly since Republicans started doing business with Saddam in the late 70's (supplying him chemical weapons), DS1, Embargo, and Operation Iraqi Liberation (OIL)....I'd say we've more than equaled Saddam on the kill scale.
