The RCMP settled with Laing out of court when he threatened to sue for unlawful detention. But the Mounties defend the search, saying Laing looked suspicious because his eyelashes were fluttering and his eyes were flashing.

64. History repeats
U.S. Encouraged by Vietnam Vote:
Officials Cite 83% Turnout Despite Vietcong Terror

by Peter Grose, Special to the New York Times (9/4/1967: p. 2)

WASHINGTON, Sept. 3-- United States officials were surprised and heartened today at the size of turnout in South Vietnam's presidential election despite a Vietcong terrorist campaign to disrupt the voting.

According to reports from Saigon, 83 per cent of the 5.85 million registered voters cast their ballots yesterday. Many of them risked reprisals threatened by the Vietcong.

The size of the popular vote and the inability of the Vietcong to destroy the election machinery were the two salient facts in a preliminary assessment of the nation election based on the incomplete returns reaching here.

72. Here it is
Canada's involvement in the Vietnam War

Many Americans believe that Canada played no part in the Vietnam War. Nothing could be further from the truth. Though the Canadian government tried its best to remain neutral, Canadians themselves became involved. It is believed that Canadian enlistment in the US Army during the Vietnam era far surpassed the 30,000 who fled as draft dodgers to Canada.

Canadians serving in the US military is nothing new. This occurred as far back as the Civil War. Forty Canadians have won America’s highest military award – the Medal of Honor.

When the US became involved in war with Vietnam, many Canadian men joined the US Armed Forces or allowed themselves to be drafted. Canadian Forces were being cut back and Vietnam allowed Canadian youth to join the US military where they would be taught skills that were not available in their own country. Helicopter flying and mechanics was the goal of many young Canadian men. Another reason to join was the fight against communism and still others joined for adventure or personal reasons.

81. more on Canadians in Vietnam
Although not directly involved in the Vietnam War, Canada was part of the International Control Commission (ICC) set up by the Geneva Conference in 1954. "Unlike Hungry and Poland, which supported North Vietnam," writes Colonel Harry G. Summers, Jr., in his Vietnam War Almanac, "Canada
attempted to remain impartial. However, it provided economic assistance to South Vietnam." As a result of the Paris Peace Accords of 1973, the ICC was superseded by the International Commission of Control and Supervision (ICCS). Canada and Poland remained members, but India was replaced by Indonesia. "When it became apparent that the North Vietnamese had no intention of living up to the accords," says Summers, "Canada withdrew on July 31, 1973 and was replaced by Iran."
Although pressured by U.S. President Lyndon Johnson to become part of the "Free World Military Forces" (Australia, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, the Republic of the Philippines, Taiwan and the Kingdom of Thailand) which provided combat troops to aid South Vietnam, the Canadian cabinet believed that because of its ICC membership Canada had to remain its impartiality.

While exact numbers are impossible to obtain, from my work as a military historian with the Canadian War Museum, I estimate that of the many thousands who served in the U.S. Vietnam-era military, some 12,00 Canadians actually served in Vietnam itself.

99. This is where the proof is that Coulter was wrong, as usual...
Edited on Tue Feb-01-05 12:05 AM by Spazito
Canada DID NOT send troops to Vietnam, individuals chose to enlist with the US Army and were under the command of the US military NOT under the Canadian military.

She, as usual, was blowing smoke out of her butt and has yet to admit, publicly, via Fifth Estate, she was WRONG.

The Fifth Estate show was able to showcase how Coulter and O'Lielly are ugly, ugly people when it comes to what makes up one's character, imo.

Edited to add: Hey Truth seekers! Mike and Kathy rule, imo! (Hey Mike and Kathy, if things get too bad south of the border, you would be more than welcome in the land of the Maple Leaf!)

77. Canada and the Vietnam War
As the war escalated, relations between the two nations deteriorated. The lowest point was in April 2, 1965 when Pearson gave a speech at Temple University in the United States which called for a reduction in the bombing of North Vietnam. A furious Lyndon B. Johnson met with Pearson and apparently grabbed the much smaller Canadian by the collar and held him against the wall, and yelled, "you don't come here and piss on my rug."

Or peach cobbler, peach ice cream, jam, salsa, yogurt, soup . . . (kidding, kinda).

Guess he's in the right state for that!

Thanks for meeting each night, feels like family.

97. Ignorance is a product of upbringing.
The world is what is shone on TV now. Big Brother has risen and it is us! We made him up! By our sheer ignorance alone. The United State is reality hidden behind the facade of a so called Democracy©. Only by looking through history can we understand what is happening today. Look at the quotes from FDR and Eisenhower. They knew way back then what was going to happen. We didn't listen and now it's over.

106. The machine guns are just penis extensions.
"I need a full automatic rifle....for display. Because I'm so insecure in my masculinity (They wouldn't use that word, it's too big for the peanut brains to think of) I need the biggest and longest gun I can get so I can feel like a real man around my buddies. Not that I'm gay or anything it's just that...I like long, slender barrel shaped things. I like rubbing them with my hands."

Why don't you all just say that you damn hypocrites! You like feeling the machine gun in your hands and pretending that tree you're aiming at is really a black woman, or a jew woman, or an arab woman. Why do you think about women cause you're too much of a damn coward, you'd never take aim at a man. Only women and children for you, you sons of bitches. Just like your leader.

I don't often post on the Malloy threads, but I listen almost every night.

I am a HUGE Malloy fan!

Now I know what it was like in the old days before TV, when folks used to gather around the radio.

116. Here's the link that explains WHY it is being proposed.
Edited on Tue Feb-01-05 01:11 AM by Cell Whitman
It's hard to keep up with all the assaults on the wall. This blog has three posts. One explains WHY this is happening to our nation. The second one is notes to the first post, and the third is about the vehicle that enabled it.

http://cellwhitman.blogspot.com/

This is the vote the first time the Republicans tried this, they lost but the theocrats will not stop. This vote would have allowed churches to spend up to 20% of their collection plates on partisan politics and remain tax exempt. I don't think very many people have any idea what has happened to our nation.

http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2002/roll429.xml

excerpt from: http://cellwhitman.blogspot.com/

That’s 168 out of 214 Republican House members, a mind-boggling 78%, who voted for the theocratization of our government. The hard-line Republicans voted for this when in fact, the majority of the clergy in America do not want to see a situation where preachers are endorsing politicians from the pulpit, which is precisely where this type of legislation would lead. The Republican theocrats don’t care what the majority of the clergy think; they want to empower the small percentage who will use their church’s collection plates to support theocratic and extreme right-wing agendas.

Here’s the Interfaith Alliance, commenting on HR 235, the latest bill currently being proposed by the Republicans to make us a more theocratic nation. This legislation travels under the deceptive name, "Houses Of Worship Free Speech Restoration Act.” -- This bill is unwanted and unneeded by America’s clergy. In a recent Gallup/Interfaith Alliance Foundation poll, a full 77% of clergy were opposed to their fellow clergy endorsing political candidates. Another poll conducted by The Pew Research Center for the People and the Press and The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, found that 70% of Americans feel that houses of worship should not come out in favor of one candidate over another during political elections.
