Does anyone know if this little scheme has died yet?

Surprising Assault On Democracy
Phyllis Schlafly June 18, 2003

Press and television channels have been filled for months about America's responsibility to bring democracy to Iraq and other faraway nations that have no prior experience with self-government. So why are some of the same people now trying to abolish the most democratic feature of our constitutional republic, namely, the right of the people to elect the U.S. House of Representatives?

An elite group of former Clinton advisers and former public officials of both political parties gathered last week at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington to announce their proposal to convert the House of Representatives from an elected body to an appointed body in the event of a national emergency. I'm not making this up; this crowd has set 9/11 of this year as its target date to pass a constitutional amendment to accomplish this goal.

This group calls itself the Continuity of Government (COG) Commission, and the acronym is apt. The COG Commission is trying to be a cog that manipulates our constitutional process of self-government.

1. this is PNAC propaganda
judging from the website, and the author (also the author of Feminist Fantasies, who sounds like a died in the wool neocon. Note how Clinton is blamed for this (or his advisors).

This does not sound like a Clinton era idea. It smacks of PNAC, in my opinion.

3. On the contrary
I think the PNAC crowd is very happy with the current system, which would leave presidential authority unchallenged during a national crisis.

You're using Phyllis Schafly as your source on this issue????

The point of the COG proposal is to ensure the maintanance of representative government.

Which would you prefer in the event of an attack that took out the entire congress? A clearly legislated process by which the various representatives could name temporary successors, or a vacuum of power into which the executive branch could project it's will without any limitations?

4. I'm not supporting Shlafly, she's simply the available link...
Everyone wants links, and so...there it is.

But I have doubts about a system in American government that relies on succession by appointment of people who have never been elected.

I am wondering if the suggestion of a constitutional amendment is going forward? And I am wondering what that amendment is shaping up to look like.
