Black congressmen riled by Bush ignorance of Voting Rights Act

By John Byrne | RAW STORY Editor

President Bush told the congressional black caucus he “didn’t know anything about” renewal of the seminal 1965 Voting Rights Act last Wednesday, RAW STORY has learned.

According to several of the 43-member strong Democratic caucus, Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-Ill.) asked the president whether he supported extending the Voting Rights Act when it comes up for renewal in 2007.

“He said he didn’t know nothing about it, and he’ll deal with the legislation that comes before him,” Rep. Jackson told RAW STORY.

A Chicago Tribune columnist who wrote about the event yesterday said that another congressman told him Bush’s response was “mind boggling.”

7. Not surprised.
I think the "deal with it when it comes before him" statement should be taken as brutely honest. He doesn't read anything, watch anything, etc. how would he know? "Just sign this Mr. President." "Okie dokie...well, what is it?" "It's something to do with voting." "Oh...I see. Next! This presidentin' stuff sure is a funnin'" "yes Mr. President, it's a blast. Sign this as well." <sound of the rubber stamp> "Next! tee-hee, weeeeeee! Next!"

8. Not only that...
...but "deal with what comes before him" is code for "I'll have Congress bury it, and plead ignorance". Hell, he doesn't care. Like he said, "He'll be happy to work with those that share his goals." What, you don't share his goals? You must be a terrorist, or worse, a f'n liberal. </sarc>

4. Its not mind boggling it is typical. When Bush snubbed the NAACP
earlier this year some African Americans saw it more as a reassurance to his "base" than affront to them. This could be the same sick message, "What voting rights, you think you have voting rights, think again."

The size of his ego is infinite.

9. Oh for the days....
...when an INTELLIGENT voice came out of the mouth of the POTUS. A voice that not only KNEW about legislation of all types, but also could quote verbatim, consider and explain statistics, debate nuances, and do so from a vast reservoir of KNOWLEDGE gained through earnest discussion with both sides, consideration of documents, READING, and LISTENING.

(I mean, connect the dots -- did anyone hear Eliot Spitzer yesterday (1/31) on NPR? oi -- I thought I'd died and gone to intellectual heaven)

10. Rove neglected to mention it to him because it wasn't all that important
in his bid to steal the election.
