Earlier today, January 31, 2005, K-9 Molly, partner of Doug, passed away after having been ill for several weeks. Molly died in her sleep prior to a planned exploratory surgery. The autopsy that followed her death leaves many questions and speculation that what was found came from her service in New York City at Ground Zero.

1. All those dogs breathed in a lot of bad stuff that shortened their lives.

and they are the "canaries" for all the people that were working there.
The worst is yet to come.
There was a recent story about what was found on the Deutsch Bank building adjacent to the WTC, that is scheduled to be demolished.
There is no good news coming out of that area.

2. How old was she??
I have been watching these dogs, because my husband was exposed to whatever was down there while cleaning up and he now has asthma.

The dogs SEEM to be living to their predicted life spans. The percentage of those who are still alive is pretty encouraging. This dog had to be 3 or 4 to be trained enough to do search and rescue, and it happened over 3 years ago, so maybe the dog just died. I have never had a big dog live over 8 years old, and many of our family's dogs have died at 6 or 7 (labs, shepherds.)

Any more info??? Thanks,

3. 6 is the prime of an adult dogs life.
If they're well cared for it is unusual that they'd die.

4. Link to story of dog's health
three years later. Does not seem to be higher incidents of cancer or lung cancer.

9. The doctors don't know yet
this is all new to them too. But I don't think he has asbestosis, because he never had an infection, like some of the guys did. Some of the firefighters did not wear their masks religiously (although they were a joke in the beginning) and they spent a LOT more time down there in the first 24 hours than my husband did, lucky for him. Some of the guys had lung infections that lasted for months and months. My husband just has reactive airways. He has gotten a lot better in the last 6 months or so, thankfully.

6. R.I.P Molly
and while the loss of Molly is important to those who loved her, I hope that it is not a sign ala the canary in a mine-shaft. The significance of that situation has so many implications and would be likely to tragically hit so many other families - while it well may be the case... (per Molly's death) I can't help but hope that there is some other explanation.
