This'll make you stop watching CNN.....
We're barely getting SIX minutes of news in any FULL HOUR of prime time news on CNN or any of the "news" networks.

And we're NOT being told about a whole slew of vital events.

WHYYYYYY? This is serious.....
See how a CNN broadcast is broken down into categories....of non news vs. real news. What a disgrace...

3. It seems like everytime something intelligent is being said on CNN.....
they run out of time! Then a commericial and then 10 minutes of happy talk. There is never enough time for intellectual arguments but an endless amout of time laughing and cooing. Leon Harris probably left cause he couldn't stand happy talking anymore.

4. Haven't watched that shit in a long time
If I want leis, I can leaf through old Soviet Pravda and just change "Brezhnev" to "Bush" and "Toilet Paper Production" to "Iraq".

5. Don't watch CNN...
OR FOx, OR MSNBC...don't watch television at all. I get my news the old-fashioned way. I READ. (Which is better anyway, since all you get from TV is a shallow and fairly one-dimensional version of events lacking in any depth or context...)

6. Great Post
Very interesting to see that my impression (that all they show is garbage) is correct.

If it were not for C-SPAN I would probably give up my cable.

And welcome to DU! :hi:

7. Thank you.
I just had an discussion with my sister who thinks she is up on the news. Quite honestly, I don't think anyone who reads the headlines or watches TV can be-because a lot of the news is only covered by foreign sources.

10. I have a dumb-assed friend on the east coast...
who said, with a straight face, that TV news is the best and most reliable because (get this): newspapers, magazines, internet, etc, all get their news from TV!!!

:silly:

9. This is a useful classification system of news network content
Taken from the site you cited:

http://www.tvnewslies.org/html/cnn___contains_no_news.html

The program content has been broken down into the following categories:

News – Reporting of recent events that affect the nation or the world, sans opinion or bias. This excludes conjecture or speculation and it excludes important news that may be reported as headline but should be detailed on a regional or local broadcast..

Headlines – Preview of upcoming stories. (Not considered news)

Talk Show – Speculation or discussion. This is where reporters, anchors or so called experts are called upon to voice their opinions on an issue. This is not reporting an event; it is offering opinions about the event.

Regional News – News events of limited relevance that belong on local news networks. This may include important issues that affect a region rather than the nation.

Tabloid News – Sensational stories that have no impact on the nation and are being reported to ensure high ratings or to distract viewers from more important issues. These are the stories that we would only find in the National Inquirer several years ago.

Infomercials – Non-news. These are segments promoting commercial ventures. In other words this is advertising dressed up as news.

16. Great going.. posting the categories
At least this shows the way the breakdown was made. The pie chart on the site brings it home, too....

11. Reality Check!
Have you tuned into your local "news" lately? This is a trend that has been around for sometime and will continue unless we push for more government standards and the roll-UP of media ownership it's gonna get worse.

The bottom line and ratings are more important than spendinig a little more $$$ to actually educate the public on policy and world affairs. But don't put all your blame on AOL/Time Warner, the average American would rather eat glass than watch a political debate, and that is why FOX is the highest rated "news" station even though it's about as much real news coverage as MTV.

12. thanks for posting this....
I haven't watched TV "news" except sporadically (e.g. when staying in a motel) in over a decade because I refuse to let the plug-in drug into my life. I figure I'm many times better informed than the average American, if for no other reason than because I SEEK my news and current events information, on the internet and in print media, and on the BBC World Service for the most part, rather than sitting passively glazed eyed in front of a flickering TV letting some big-haired bimbo spoon feed me the tidbits deemed safe for public consumption and ratings enhancement.

But you're a rarity...as are most people who post here...:-)
This information should be printed out and given to those who turn on TV news and believe they're getting it...

14. 80 percent....
....of America gets its news from its local half hour broadcast. Only three minutes of that is national news. Eighty percent of America gets three minutes of national news daily.

Karl Rove likes it that way.

15. You betcha...
This is not accidental.... the less the public knows, the more they believe what the Bush/PNAC cartel tells them. Igorance breeds Republican voters.

18. I did my own test and achieved comparable results
after I read the original article I sat down for an hour and tracked a primetime broadcast (7PM last night actually) to see if the pattern was the same.

it was give or take a few seconds.

Sick, sad, America.

22. Unplug your cable
That will really make you stop watching CNN.

Read books, rent DVDs, take up a hobby or two, spend more time with your spouse and/or kids, and enjoy what little life there is anymore.

I unplugged my cable more than ten years ago and I've never missed it. I've never seen a single episode of the Osbournes, the Anna Nicole Show, the O'Reilly Factor, or a single Backstreet Boys video. Can you seriously tell me I've missed anything?

Unplug it. Save your money, and your sanity.

... you'll miss Spongebob.

Seriously - TV is for entertainment. For news, you must use your brain.

24. I actually have seen one episode of Spongebob
It's a good show, and I do regret not having watched it over its run. But I'm sure there will be a DVD collection coming out for it one day, and since I have small nieces and nephews, I will be fully justified in owning it, no matter how crazed it makes my wife.
