Bush did a good job
Regardless of what he said, he said it well and presented himself better than I've ever seen. I think he hit a home run with the average viewer.

at least this time he pronounced better. But still don't change the person. He is an idiot and will always be an idiot. I'm not to worried about what people think because this guy is a total screw up, and he will continue to screw up. thats a given.

105. Even great hatred of the man cannot alleviate...
the fact that it was an extraordinary and sweeping speech.

Basically, Bush outlined three major areas of interest: Reforming SS, Reforming the tax code, and establishing freedom and democracy in former tyrannies in the ME 9ostensibly for the security of America).

These issues VERY MUCH DO resonate with the general public despite others here who claim that the people don't care or understand these issues. Wrong.

In spite of all the teeth gnashing, I see Bush as poised to win a HUGE VICTORY for the republican party. If any two of these plans are moderately successful in perpetuity, Bush becomes an historically popular president. If all three are successfull he becomes legendary-- on the order of FDR or Lincoln.

No I am not smoking crack. When is the last time a president talked this big and was apparently capable of delivering on EVERYTHING he brought up?

Establishing freedom and democracy in the ME? He who started the damn war in the first place w/o cause? How many dead bodies are we up to?
SS: it it ain't broke, don't fix it. Why the sudden rush and who will get their pockets lined as a result?
Reforming tax code? I'm ill-informed on this, but let's just say that it would be nice if he considered everyone's taxes, not just the haves and the have-mores.

Edit to add that I will NEVER compare this blivet to FDR or Lincoln, and to me that dirties their names.

115. Once again-- your hatred will not change the results...
of his presidency and how he may be perceived historically.

I am absolutely amazed that this guy who exhibits so many traits of mediocrity has transformed what was almost sure to be a hum-drum presidency when elected (pre-911) into such a huge force of change and momentum in America and abroad.

Kerry summed it up best on election night when he was reputed to complain: "I can't believe I'm losing to this guy."

It's better to be lucky than smart. Bush illustrates this. If he pulls out this Iraq business, in spite of how wrong it was, history will call him visionary and courageous.

As to the speech. I would call his performance very effective, and that horrifies me.

9. Kevin Drum sez...
Over at Political Animal: "The domestic half of the speech seemed fairly pedestrian and flat. The foreign affairs half was often soaring and beautiful. Overall a decent speech, although I doubt he changed many minds about Social Security privatization."

The mother's hug is the key moment of the speech. It is being played everywhere, it's closing out the national network broadcasts. Brilliant moves by the Republicans - hopefully with Howard Dean as chair we can beat them at their own game.

Remember a time when people used to acutally freakin LISTEN to the words a President uttered? With Shrub, they don't listen to what he says; they listen to how he says it.

And if he shows up, and is able to pronounce 50% of the words he utters, he's done a good job, in their eyes.

Now I see how easy it is for people to drink the kool aid---because they don't listen!

I really like about Senators like Reid, Kerry, Edwards and Boxer for example. They speak from the heart and soul unlike Bush and his people who just speak from their minds to sell their agenda. I was watching CSPAN earlier this week and some republican guy was talking about immigration, clashing civlization's in the country and the boarders. He was doing okay for a republican until he called the left "looney" and brought up Michael Moore. That pissed me off. I thought about Emailing him but then I figued he wouldn't care.

17. Yes he did, but
SOTUs are ephemeral and have a short shelf life. From a political point of view, the obvious question to ask is will he have swayed the public on the need for SS reform. My guess: Maybe a little, but no home run. He maybe got himself to first base and that ain't a scoring position.

He has to convince skittish house Republicans, and some number of Democrats in both houses. Passing a SS reform bill without a degree of bi-partisan support would be suicidal for the Republicans. Bush is term limited, but senators and reps are not. They'll be looking over their backs.

Agreed on the SOTU point...ephemeral.
That said, this part of your post was interesting:

"From a political point of view, the obvious question to ask is will he have swayed the public on the need for SS reform. My guess: Maybe a little, but no home run. He maybe got himself to first base and that ain't a scoring position."

IMHO, all he ever needs is to get on first base. Then Propaganda Central takes over and before you know it, he's got his "home run." This man is harmful to the balance of the world in the minds of reasonable people across the globe, yet he keeps on winning. Reasonable people need to begin to ask why that is and formulate an effective response.

For example: my mother said to me last weekend, "well, he'll never get to overhaul SocSec because 'the people' are against that."

I said, "since when has he cared?" and pointed out that 6 million people protested against the war in Iraq beforehand -- an unprecendented occurence -- and * didn't even BLINK. She stopped and reflected on that, and admitted she had no answer.

This is what we are up against. And no, before you ask, my mother is NOT stupid. She just has been conditioned to believe the news anchors she views. And THAT, I think, is the problem.

35. SS is the holy grail of USA politics
I highly doubt that congressional Republicans, esp. in the House would pass such legislation on a party line vote. If they do that, and it turns out badly, they'll be out of work. Bush is term limited, congressmen aren't. The public has a short memory and that's why members of the the House have short terms. Plus, senior voters have a high turn out rate in elections, not a good group to annoy.

Re: Protests against the Iraqi war. This had bi-partisan support in congress.

I would never suggest that your mother is stupid. I'm sure she is a fine women, just as was mine.

And most don't appreciate exactly how little regard the BA has for the American people.

They want to assume he means well, because they can't quite face the fact that a sitting President is actually openly working against their interests.

He doesn't embarrass me as much when he just reads a speech as opposed to when he has to answer questions or engage in dialog because that requires thinking.

Yes, he did a fine job of reading to the American people in front of a camera. But my standards of a homerun must be different than most if that's all it takes to hit a homerun.

knowing that nothing they said would ever be challenged, no lies would ever be called out, and that the fawning losers in the press would hang on your every word.

I could give you a speech ten times as good as Bush's if I were allowed to lie even half as much as he is.

41. Nonsense.
This is like saying, "If I had the sound on the TV off, he did great."

Yeah, he was doing great, except for that whole marriage amendment, threatening to suspect Syria of having WMD, and encouraging Iran to open revolt when we're trying to negotiate with them.

His social security reform is politically and justifiably impossible. He hasn't the votes, and won't get them, nor can he make a compelling argument once the plan is fleshed out.

This speech was a well-written, well-read, outright disaster.

46. Bush being idiot misses the point. Junta is pathological, vicious, rapacious
Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted; the indifference of those who should have known better; the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most; that has made it possible for evil to triumph: Haile Selassie
Friends, we are entering waters in which we may all drown, filled with nothing but anger and fanaticism. We had better take a long, hard look before we enter this raging stream because our country never be the same again. For those who advocate this sea change in American polity and social life do not want to talk; they want to impose. They do not want debates; they want obedience. And most importantly, they do not want us to pay attention to their desire for a de facto (and for many a de jure) Christian theocratic state.

I believe there is no longer any room for apathy or laziness. The voices of hatred, masquerading as "Christians" or "liberators," are beginning to echo eerily the pre WWII days in Germany when the bigoted darkness within "decent" people was stirred by racism, intolerance and vindictiveness, stamping out dissent and opposing viewpoints.

We no longer have the option of turning our eyes away for everywhere we go the same familiar faces and voices greet us. Hate radio spews the worst kind of aggressive boorishness, inane TV talk shows belie the deep distress Americans feel about their broken political processes, and a complacent media is ignoring the underlying tensions contained therein that threaten to explode in single-minded fury.

61. I think I can be pretty objective. I believe Bush was horrible.
And for once, it wasn't the delivery that was the problem. It was his actual words.

When he said the Social Security system would be "bankrupt", and was met by groans and boos, he looked like a liar. In that moment, all the WMD lies, all the fearmongering of the past 4 years seemed to hang on him like a cheap suit.

Later, when he talked about Syria and Iran, he was too overt. It sounded too much like the lead-up to the Iraq invasion, and I have to think alot of people got that "here we go again" feeling.

Now to establish my objectivity bona fides... I thought Cheney demolished Edwards in the VP debate. I thought Kerry destroyed Bush in the first debate, beat him with a barely comfortable lead in the second, and tied in the third.

75. Alternate take on Dem response
I think the Dems seemed pretty childish to gasp (not even really a boo) on air, rather that wait for the rebuttal after the speech. The sitting part was very good and well-measured, when they disagreed on a point they all stayed seated and rose on points they were more in agreement with.

They sounded way too stuffy and reactionary with that gasp. The rebuttal did not help much, they need someone with more energy, fire, and the ability to shoot off the hip to give those kinds of things since it's a terrible position to be giving a speech from by the very nature of it. I mean, does that kid in Searchlight even exist? It sounded so polished. If they had someone with more gusto to at least provide a feeling there was a passion to Democrat ideas, it would at least have left a lingering positive impression.

The gasp made Bush actually look stronger, like he is taking on a goliath by trying to slay the troubles of Social Security. He also laid out some clear numbers, where I didn't feel the Democratics response did as good a job of saying why those numbers were wrong, instead giving more confusing numbers... they should have had the proper numbers to counter every number Bush gave one for one.

They need alot more of that confrontational style. There are way too many "go along to get along", milquetoast moderates at the front of the party these days.

I don't even see is as particularly rude. Tony Blaire regularly deals with much worse in Parliament. Our system could use a serious dose of that Parliamentary "childishness", and our politicians should be able to face opposition instead of hiding from it. The State of the Union has been a PR puff piece for far too long.

78. Not a drop of inspiration
This speech that they wrote for him was the same old shit, "here's what we're going to do to you next, and you can;t stop it." Notice he did not start with the traditional "the state of the union is strong," as Peter Jennings pointed out. If he had I think so many Americans would have shot __________ (insert the liquid of your choice) through their collective noses that the sound would have been heard in Washington.

The vitality seems to have been sucked out of this country over the last few years and has been replaced with mean spirited campaigns and agendas--all aimed at oppression and suppression based on radical religious ideologies. There was no inspiration in this speech, no vitality, and no vision. Just a less than mediocre half-wit standing at a podium reading a rehearsed speech that he could not have written on his best day, backed up by two bloated old half dead farts who are only interested in lining their pockets with taxpayers money.

102. Yep.
By all accounts he made the best possible case--meaning irrelevant blather and still pretty doggone evil--for four more years of the plutocratic agenda of his handlers.

As to the original post, though, I hardly think that equates to a home run. I suspect that the "average viewer" was watching something else, or got bored halfway through. The only ones watching all the way to the end may have been his diehard supporters, for whom his reading the phonebook would have been a "home run."

They are happy just to see him stand there and not be Kerry, and to imagine themselves among those who will benefit from his corporate giveaways.

135. Yes, I caught most of the lies
What I want to know, is why the lies, inconsistencies and just outrageous statements aren't making the headlines in this country. Can you imagine if this had been Clinton, or Carter?! They would have been toast, within hours. The American press has got to start stepping up to the plate and calling these guys on what they are perpetrating on the American public! They are getting away with murder!:grr:
