3. As always, he is trying to copy Kerry
He must have seen those photos of Kerry peering over his reading glasses, and said something like:

"hot damn, that Kerry guy sure does look smart in them glasses...If I get me some of them glasses like his, do ya think people will stop saying I'm stupid?"
