Moment of Clarity from a 14 year old.
My daughter this morning said to me that she was studying forms of government in her social studies class.

She said they are learning about democracies, republics, communism, fascist states, monarchies etc...

She screwed up her face and said...

"The way people are acting, like, we really look like a fascism one than a democracy."

My wife and I looked at her with mouths hanging open.

I was concerned before but now when my daughter sees the signs it really frightened me.

On top of that add the SOTU GOP rally and a report on the death and life of a soldier from Sioux Falls...I cried on the drive to work.

1. There is only one explanation for this . . .
Her social studies teacher must be an america-hater!

2. It is like the child in Indonesia that warned her parents of the
approaching tsunami.
Children have clearer senses than we adults do. They have not been poluted with the world.

3. hugs -- what a great kid you have!
days like today make me *want* to cry too -- but i'm too busy being angry.

actually, i used to cry on my way to work all the time -- even before the Bush reign of terror. but that's a whole other story. ;)

cheer up, you have a brilliant child!

4. thnx...
It was the thursday morning NPR killed soldier story I hav heard many of these now and each time and get so sad and angry that these young men and women had to die in a war that started because Bush and goons wanted it.

The young man the told about today was particulaly gut wrenching.

His mother was celebrating his birthday and the fact he was due to come home in the next few days when she got notice of his death.

6. those NPR stories really bring it "home"
i was laid off in november, but i remember a day earlier in the year when i was driving home from work with tears running down my cheeks listening to heart-wrenching story of a fallen soldier --

i got home and found one of my dogs had escaped. we eventually got him back.. but the experience of being so affected by the story is indeliably etched in my memory. it felt like my missing dog was a kind of "gift" to show me the LOSS involved in this stupid war.

i'm 38 and have no "children" except for two little italian greyhounds. they are very special, but they are "just dogs."

when i put myself in the "shoes" of a wife or mother who just lost a husband or son -- i just lose it -- it's not abtract. it's not theoretical. its freakish in it's abject horror.

7. I'm glad she's aware of what's going on.
Kudos also to her teacher for not white washing the truth. Knowledge is power! Errr, sometimes, anyway. Or at least for 1/2 of us?
