Subject: On the Ground in Mosul - Part II

Hi Gang!

The continuing saga of my brother-in-law's wife's brother Kenny. As you've already read (see BuzzFlash Mailbag, dated 1 FEB 05), Kenny and his squad from Indiana arrived safely in Mosul, Iraq. The catch is that they've been shorted on MRE's. The official story they were told is that the shipment was poisoned by insurgents. Another catch is that the email accounts they were given are available at a cost.

Here is yet still more good news from Kenny.

While Iraqis are using our temper tents as "temporary housing," Kenny and his squad have been bivouacked in a shipping container, the type you see on cargo ships. They sleep on plywood sheets and their sleeping bags. While they are on duty, they have to pack up every last bit of their belongings and carry every single thing they own on their backs as there is absolutely no security where they are and no way to secure any of their gear.

My wife and I are absolutely outraged at what we are hearing. She and I are both former Air Force and even though we would be REMF's in this whole ordeal, even the lowest ranking individual in personnel knows this is entirely unacceptable.

Kenny's family and my wife's are pooling our resources and will be sending care packages to him and the ten guys stuffed in the Cargo 8 Motel on a bi-weekly basis. I will be going to the local Dick's Sporting Goods and shaming them into sending a box full of pseudo-MRE's for these guys.

Check around. Find out if there are guys from your area who are there and are getting the same treatment and help them out.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to email Evan Byah (D) and Dick Lugar (R), Indiana's senators. It shouldn't be too hard to figure out which one is going to get the nastier of my emails. If any Buzzer out there is also from Indiana, I'll make it easy to help.

1. That conex box would stop a piece of shrapnel better than
a tent would. They may be sleeping in there for protection against things that go kablooie in the night

3. Halliburton and Bushco are holding out on them.
MRE's were poisoned by insurgents my ass. We have 40 million for an inauguration but troops are going hungry in the field.

4. I've read other articles that stated they are going hungry
You're right, 40 million for an inaug, yet the troops are going hungry and without proper gear. Shameful.

5. Id really love to know how they poisoned MREs!! How the hell do
you poison twice packaged vacuum locked and hermetically sealed food items!? I mean its pretty freaking obvious if someone got into your MRE!!

I seriously doubt they want to be sleeping in the cargo container for protection. The things are loud and echo like crazy, they also take forever to heat up or cool down. Sorry but sleep is precious in any conflict for myriad reasons. Most troops Ive know would take the tent and some sleep while risking possible shrapnel....

having said all that... there isnt enough information to make head or tails of their situation except to say that it looks like our kids are still getting fucked in the military!

6. Gee I guess the SS surplus siphoned off to Halliburton to provide meals
to the troops just doesn't go very far in Iraq. Must be because it moves from Social Security to a bank in Houston, and then to a bank in the Caymans.
