Critics Enter Ring Against Eastwood
By DAVID GERMAIN
AP Movie Writer

LOS ANGELES - Not everyone is in Clint Eastwood's corner as his acclaimed boxing drama "Million Dollar Baby" heads into the Academy Awards.

(Spoiler alert: The rest of this story could ruin the movie for you.) Some conservative critics and groups representing the disabled say "Million Dollar Baby" is a sucker punch against the notion that people with paralyzing infirmities can lead lives worth living.

The film's harshest detractors say it's little more than propaganda supporting legalization of assisted suicide. Director and star Eastwood says the characters' choices are rooted in the story and that the movie is not about euthanasia.

1. Moron Conservatives.

Maggie ASKED for help to end her life! It was HER CHOICE! Once again, these rightwing @$$holes would rather make people SUFFER than to allow them the dignity of one last act of control in life. I suppose that for these CONservatives, if you drag out your misery long enough, one of their High Priest Televangelists will invite you to go on their shows and shove your forehead and pronounce you cured?

2. Guess what? Killing the handicapped was Hitler's idea
So now it's "killing the handicapped"? I hope that some of these people have to watch a parent suffer through a painful terminal illness that there is no cure for (thanks again to stopping stem-cell research), knowing that there is no end to the pain (not even some relief, what with the Feds outlawing even the remotest legalization of marijuana for medicinal purposes).

When they look into the pain-riddled eyes of their mother or father and know that they can only extend the suffering, they will know hell.

This is a person's choice, to terminate their pain. This is not a person who gets a papercut and decides that they are through with their "suffering". You do have to wonder how many nights Christopher Reeve cried, wishing that the people would have let him die, instead of what torture he was going through.

These jackasses are painting us as the kind who would love to just walk up there and blow someone's brains out (funny, they don't have that concern for "enemy combatants").

3. I still feel that the individual should have the right to choose
I can tell you that for myself, simply "existing" would not do it for me. I know many people who have paralysis of varying degrees (one is a quad), and for myself, I would NOT want to live that way. If others choose to, that's their right as well..

When you must have everything "done for you", and you cannot control even the most basic things in life, you should have the right to decide whether you want to continue.

Of course I am speaking as someone who has spent 56 years on the planet, so I can understand how young people should carry on as long as possible, because you never know what medical treatments may be coming along...

5. The right wing hates euthanasia as it denies $$ to the health-care industry
Individuals who must face a slow, painful, agonizing death also run up a significantly larger healthcare tab than someone in that position who opts for euthanasia.

With the right wing, it's always about the money.
