When I studied history in school, I remember reading about the birth of our democracy. Labels were given to different groups like the reactionaries. Way back in elementary school, these words held little meaning for me. Thanks to the current politiical clime and my struggle to make sense of it, it hit me today that reactionary is the perfect term for today's Democratic party. They react to everything Bush does but stand for nothing or so it seems.
BushCo's Social Security plan proposals? They boo them. Bush's outrageous vote theft? They meekly avoid verifying the votes. Tax cuts? They oppose them.
When exactly do they stand up and state what they are for?
It seems that Bush pushes the envelope sometimes just to get them to react.
At least the term has a personal meaning for me now since I care way too much about what is happening to our country.
It also dawned on me today what the Powell Doctrine means. See, Rumsfeld and BushCo blocked Powell from using overwhelming force to go into Iraq and Afghanistan. BUT, in New York at the RNC, they used this very tactic to arrest dissenters and protesters to muffle them. They used it during the inauguration. They used overwhelming force when I went to a war protest in Chicago last year on the anniversary of the Iraq fiasco. In all these cases, the police dressed in RoboCop gear were present disproportionately to the threat since we've had little or no violence during protests in years.
How ironic.
Guess I'll go to bed now.
