considering that I smoke and have 2 cats that I'm allergic to. My smoking sooner or later I hope to quit. Who knows maybe I will join you in becoming an ex-smoker. My cats I will never give up. When these ones die I plan on getting a couple of new ones.

Officials say coke plant is best hope for rebound


U.S. Coking and the Sierra Club are appealing the mercury restrictions that the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency placed on the proposed plant's pollution permit. U.S. Coking contends that the annual maximum of 36 pounds is unattainable and unfair, considering that no other coke works has a mercury limit. The environmental group says it is too high.

Coke, the result of baking coal at high temperatures to remove impurities, is burned in steel mills to alloy its carbon with iron to make steel. And the Appalachian coal that historically has been shipped through Toledo is preferred for coke-making because of its chemical properties.

Audit finds EPA based mercury rule on industry plan

The Bush administration overlooked health effects and sided with the electric industry in developing rules for cutting toxic mercury pollution, the Environmental Protection Agency's inspector general said Thursday.

The agency fell short of its own requirements and presidential orders by "not fully analyzing the cost-benefit of regulatory alternatives and not fully assessing the rule's impact on children's health," the agency's internal watchdog said in a 54-page report.

Nikki L. Tinsley's report said the EPA based its mercury pollution limits on an analysis submitted by Western Energy Supply and Transmission Associates, a research and advocacy group representing 17 coal-fired utilities in eight Western states.
