SHELLEY QUITS
Secretary of state says controversy surrounding fund-raising, use of federal money and his temper have swamped his office's 'ability to function effectively'

Saturday, February 5, 2005

Kevin Shelley resigned as California's secretary of state Friday, admitting that the growing scrutiny over his questionable campaign fund-raising, possible misuse of federal voting funds and admittedly volcanic temper left him unable to do the job he assumed two years ago.

*SNIP*

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said he spoke with Shelley Friday and promised to quickly appoint a replacement to the position, which pays $131,250 a year.

2000: Katharine Harris

2004: Kenneth Blackwell

And in 2008, who wants to take bets on whether California's Secretary of State JUST HAPPENS to be the republican presidential campaign's manager?

And there are still DUers who believe we live in a democracy?

1. But at least he was not known as the gropinator
Edited on Sat Feb-05-05 03:04 AM by Erika
You're over-reacting. It is true that Ahhnold became governor by popular choice but it was when he said that he woulld reign in costs without cutting benefits to schools. He's failed miserably. If he keeps at it, California will be another banana republic. Maria should get the hell out of democrat politics. She's every bit a phony GOP as he is.

2. This post has nothing to do with Arnold's sorry-assed governance.
I can live with that. What I can't live with is yet another GOP crook Secy of State who will pull all but one voting machine out of every democratic precinct, and move them all to the most affluent red precincts, and press for Diebold machines without paper trails.

I don't know why you think this is about Arnold. California voters will continue to vote democrat, but with these thugs jiggering the vote, we may never win this state again. Get it?

Not much to smile about in California tonight!

4. Let's start an e-mail, letter, telephone campaign to
Schwarzenegger asking him to appoint someone chosen by the Democrats, and tell him if he doesn't we will not consider the outcome of the next election to be legitimate.

5. As if Ahhnold would listen
He was voted in and the idol worship is still there. Conan will reign supreme especially with Lady Kennedy at his side and supporting him completely. He'll be GOP 100%.

It's very sad.

9. Apparently his mother has taken ill
and the stress is too much for him to keep up the fight.

The one good thing is our democratic state congress is very strong, and has learned how to out-maneuver the Nazi with relative little effort.

10. Shelly was humping Sequoia's leg, along with NV SOS Dean Heller ...
Edited on Sat Feb-05-05 07:18 AM by NVMojo
be afraid, California, be very afraid if this continues.

snip...

Counties face a 2006 federal deadline to have state-certified voting systems ready for the elections, but Shelley's office has approved just one Sequoia model, and that is not certified for the June 2006 primary. If the counties are unable to use voting systems that comply with federal law, the results could be vulnerable to legal challenge.

McCormack suggested Shelley's office appears to have favored Oakland-based Sequoia Voting Systems in a series of voting machine certification decisions while a competitor, Ohio-based Diebold Inc., was not treated fairly.

McCormack would not elaborate on what she believed motivated the secretary of state's actions.

While neither company is a big campaign contributor in California, Sequoia did give $100,000 to back the Shelley-sponsored Voting Modernization Bond Act, Proposition 41, in 2002 and $1,000 to Shelley's campaign the same year.

snip...

12. Take a deep breath
This state isn't going to turn red, whether
Arnie appoints a Blackwell/Harris clone or not.
There are still more Democrats who will look
over the appointed Sec. of State's shoulder
more than he or she will like it. There will
be more oversight here than in Ohio or Florida.
There are still more of us.

13. I sure as hell hope so.
Florida is as blue as a state can get in the South - Kerry won by a wider margin in urban Broward County than here in the Bay Area! But look what they've done to that state!

15. Until Bill Jones decided to run against Boxer, he was a good
secretary of state - the only Republican in the Davis government.

So don't despair. Yet.

17. Not the population. We liberals are very much a majority here.
However, we have an illigitimate stealth government installing themselves step by stealthy, panther step. I hate them and the musclehead who is their poster boy.
