"The Democrats DO have a plan for Social Security:"
The Democrats do have a plan for Social Security: They implemented it 70 years ago and it's still working.

1. I believe this is the correct answer.
Edited on Sat Feb-05-05 01:41 PM by tasteblind
And then follow up with "The Bush plan guarantees that guaranteed benefits will be cut."

And then kill with "Borrow $2 trillion more in our name."

Rinse and repeat.

3. And Our Response To Bush's Other Proposed Cuts Is?
What about the other cuts outside of "privitization" proposed by Bush?

7. I haven't seen his proposal yet.
Is it in coherent form? Last I heard there were a few talking points, nothing particularly specific, but that was in the leadup to the SOTU.

Honestly, I assume Social Security will not survive until I qualify for it, simply based on the fact that our economy is the nation-state equivalent of a stupid person with a maxed out credit card running around with a gun threatening family members and attacking the neighbors.

4. Ya' know what the problem is here...
Bush et al are so absurd that they are causing us to overload our brains. They are tragically funny, but their dog and pony show is just a cover so they can sneak around and rob us blind and make legistaltion to round us up and fence us in.

This thread >> GOP introduces bill to suspend ALL laws - makes moot all our humor, all our activism, everything. He's setting up a legal means of dictatorship.

The REAL ID Act of 2005 introduced January 26, 2005, by Rep. Sensenbrenner SEEMS like just a basic immigration add on, but the looseness of the provisions imply that they can be used to suspend ALL laws with NO RECOURSE by the people to do a damm thing about it.

Whether it's pigeons crapping on statues or Social Security crises, this administration is like a skillful carnie, always keeping your eyes glued to shells moving faster than light, but with skilled timing distracting you at the right moment so you NEVER win.

If I were Bush, I'd be worried about a hostile takeover right about now, and this bill if passed - and how can it not if no one even here on the DU gives a shit about it??? - gives him permission to do ANYTHING to ANYONE for ANY REASON.

PEOPLE WAKE UP!!!!

9. I saw that - I think that law and others to come are the real goal.
How do we draw media attention to the REAL ID Act provision?

Homeland Security will be able to act outside of the law with no checks and balances. We need to contact senators as to what in the hell they are being asked to do.

Sometimes they don't even bother to read these things.

8. The Dems' alternative to the Bush plan? "Social Security!"
http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/2005_01_30_digbysblog_archive.html#110746585935730631

"May I just make one little observation that seems to have escaped those who believe that Democrats should offer an alternative to the Preznit's Personal Privatized Individual Retirement Account Security plan? We already are offering an alternative. It's called Social Security."

10. The Democrats plan IS Social Security.
Edited on Sat Feb-05-05 03:06 PM by K-W
The Democrats support strengthening an already robust program.

The Republicans support trying to fix something that isnt broken. And doing it intentionally badly.

11. Good To Hear That
That's good to hear. I don't think the program needs to be fixed, however, tell me what the Democratic Party program is to strengthen it?

Lowering the retirement age back down to 65 would be a good start. We can afford to do that now.

14. Social Security is sound there is NOTHING wrong with it. If Bush doesn't
Edited on Sat Feb-05-05 03:38 PM by Zinfandel

lie about it, how can he and the republicans take steps to systematically destroy Social Security?

Just as the republicans have vowed to do for seventy years?

Social Security goes against republican ideology, republicans have always despised, loathed, detested & hated Social Security from day one...

Republicans have to find a way to get rid of SS and they found one...

All the republicans want and need is their foot in the door, and they will be able to destroy SS completely, years down the line!!!

This is fact!

16. More Than Petitions Are Required
It will take a whole lot more than petitions and e-mails to defend social security.

Has Senator Stabenow commented on the other proposals to restrict and/or cut benefits?

17. Yes that's correct
That is why I also write snail mail to my local newspapers, radio stations and tv stations. I also write my senators and congress members.

I am signing every petition I come across to voice protest against this attempted rip-off. Our voices must be heard. I don't think * is
going to have such an easy sell this time.

You might want to read further on the Senator's page. I haven't finished reading her points.
