He refused to serve alongside slavs and poles that were also in the Astro-Hungary army. He was bigoted. When they caught up with him he flunked the physical anyway. The King of Bavaria gave him a special pass to join the Aryan pure Bavarian army that was more to his liking. Trouble was they didn't like him. One of the soldiers called him a white crow among all the black ones.

I always was amazed at the hatred Eastern Europeans had for each other back after WWII when many of them were relocating in the US as displaced persons. To me they all looked and sounded alike.
