I think the old codger did a bang-up job of keeping everyone amused for a while. Understand what you're saying, but all the same, don't underestimate the world-wide audience that the event gets - I know for a fact that ITV1 (the channel that shares the largest audience reach in the UK along with BBC1) carried the event live (cos I wuz a-watchin' it) dedicating over 5 hours airtime. Similarly in Denmark the game was carried live on TV2 - dunno about the rest of Europe, I only know about the UK & Denmark because that's where I spend all my time!

Nevertheless, whilst yes, it is fundamentally an American event, the NFL does have a considerable worldwide audience.

Macca was chosen, no doubt, as a very "safe & fluffy" performer after the quite bewildering outrage at last year's "indiscretion". From a Europe perspective, we did rather scratch our heads at the furore that rocked the US about Janet Jackson - mind you, we are all disgusting liberal-pinko-commie-fag-subversives over here, who believe that the human body is not actually something to be ashamed of - outrageous I know!

Just to throw down a marker here - I'm not so much a "liberal" but a libertarian (well, anarchist actually!), but it bothers me (as it does much of the rest of the world) at the way in which the term liberal has become one of scorn and abuse in the US. So long may this site and it's aims last, I'm looking forward to dipping in and offering my twopenneth every now and then.

Try to look at in context: the FCC was looking to put pressure on CBS for 60 Minutes and this gave them cover. (My sister pointed out that this month was the first time in her memory that 60 Minutes didn't go on at all for two Sundays. So maybe the pressure worked.)

I don't really understand your comparison. Both McCartney and Janet Jackson are not current artists - so it's not like your comparing an old man to say, Eminem or someone like that. Janet Jackson (except for her stunt last year) has never been considered a edgey or groundbreaking artist; IMO, she's just a garden variety pop-performer.

OTOH, people from across the spectrum would probably agree that McCartney is a living legend who has done his share of "shit disturbing" over his lifetime. But the Superbowl's not really the place to provoke anyway, the way I see it.

IMO, it was an outstanding, hard rocking performance.
