3. I might be if I were watching it.
But I'm not, partly because of what I expect it will be like this year. (Also because I think football sucks.)

4. Yes.
Completely. But then again, I'm nearly always appalled by nationalism, so I might not be the best person to ask. ;)

5. The false appearance of national unity
Edited on Sun Feb-06-05 06:36 PM by teryang
the fraudulent linkage of a sordid colonial war to WWII. If our national prestige could fall any lower with our traditional allies this will do it.

8. I know, it's insulting to those who fought in WWII
for them to use WWII to glorify the imperialist wars of Iraq and Afghanistan.

9. I'm glad I am not watching it
I used to be a loyal football fan--no more. I suspected this fascist overview would reign--sports events are susceptable to propagandist devices now. If it is true--I shy away, much as I like sports.

10. Vicarious battles never hurt anyone. Only if they glorify war, not
the sacrifice and pain, or the truth behind it all. And with this administration, the story of USMC Gen Smedley D. Butler (2x CMOH) who saved the republic from a 1932 coup attempt (composed of Bush's relatives btw), will never be shown on TV.

23. amazed. disgusted. and somewhat sickened.
kind of like Germany and the nazi Olympics... or what I would have expected in communist Russia in the days of old...

spreading the "freedom" bs a bit thick and deep and the militaristic rah-rahs gave me a nauseating jolt.

have turned off the telly at this point. Frankly i would have preferred another Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction...

24. They go well together
Football and the military theme are a perfect match. That, and gambling, are the reasons it's #1 in this country.

26. Not watching, but Tampa's Gasparilla Parade has also been militarized
Some kind of tank or "emergency vehicle" and a whole slew of Guard units, etc. etc. at the beginning of the parade. Which is ironic since pirates aren't supposed to be about law and order.

But at a deeper level, empire and piracy are synonymous.

27. This is surprising?
Most team sports, particularly football, are sublimated warfare. All the illogical, emotional cheering for 'your team', regardless of who the players might have been with last year or might be with next year, is pure jingoistic nationalism. Mix that with an unabashedly brutal sport like football, and you have the makings of false patriotism.

It's only a short move from there to turning a sports event into a patriotic rally.

I decided years ago that sports were not worth the emotional investment, unless I was directly involved. What does it really matter in the world who has run the most yards, who has the most RBIs, who is the top seeded player.

It's all a distraction from what is going on -- the circus half of bread and circuses.

28. yes, i am. IT IS SICKENING... I used to live in Jacksonville and I can't
believe the way in which the bush fascist empire has taken over a previously incredibly healthy get together sports time in jacksonville...(and i just saw some pre-game something or other they were having as i switched channels on the local news stations).

There will be true celebration on the streets of MURRRIKKKAHHHH the day the bush fascist empire falls...as it has always happened anywhere when dictatorships of the right or of the left fall.

30. I am disgusted by it
First,

9/11 happened in 2001... that is 1243 days ago or 40 months and 13 days ago

Second,

Our military should not be losing their lives over in Iraq or any action under dimwits direction.

Third,

Football has nothing to do with the military

Fourth,

Football should not allow anything to use its time like this.
