When A Problem Child Comes Along, Must You Whip It?
Talk about child abuse on the boards tonight reminded me of a very nasty item I read about in the paper today. No link to that same article, but Google located THIS:

http://www.pahomeschoolers.com/messages/12699.html

"Spoons are for cooking, belts are for holding up pants, hands are for loving, and rods are for chastening," read the advertisement she saw nearly two years ago for the 22-inch nylon rod. It also cited a biblical passage, which instructs parents not to spare the "rod of correction."

Unbelievable. It is, however, no surprise whatsoever that James Dobson of Focus on the Family--the same sicko who's been shrieking about Spongebob Squarepants lately and claims "love" is now a codeword for acceptance of the "homosexual lifestyle choice"--is a firm believer in using a plastic rod to whip small children into submission. He fancies it the sort of love that ISN'T sexually perverse.

Love is Hate.
Hate is Love.
We is f***ed.

1. He beat a dog with a belt
That was posted here a couple days ago. Because it growled at him and wouldn't go to its sleeping place. A real knock down drag out. With a dog.

That's where he got his epiphany about child rearing.

Psycho.

2. well, to be fair, it IS in the bible..
"He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him takes care to chastise him" (Proverbs 13:24 NAB)

3. Mistranslation
The "rod" in question is a shepherd's crook, used to guide sheep away from trouble, not to beat them.

At least, that's what I've read when this gets discussed on the Homeschooling and Parenting boards I frequent. :)

The infamous ROD is a guidance device. Not a 'belt' .. a 'whip' . nor any other punishment.

Ignorance runs rampant.

My cousin tried to con my grandparents by using that verse to get a car (hot rod). Don't spare the rod, dude.. I wanna DRIVE.

I hate to think of the children who are abused in the name of Dobson. Yet he claims he advocates for CHILDREN.

What a fucking shame/sham.

sputter...... :wow:

5. well it becomes a matter of interpretation then,
Edited on Mon Feb-07-05 05:26 AM by dutchdoctor
but judging from other bloodthirsty parts of the old testament where rods are being described I wouldn't be surprised if the original authors were talking about an actual spanking. I mean, how do you explain "chastise"
Here's a few:

"Chastise your son, for in this there is hope, but do not desire his death. The man of violent temper pays the penalty; even if you rescue him, you will have to do it again." (Proverbs 19:18-19 NAB)

"Happy those who seize your children and smash them against a rock." Psalms 137:9 NAB

"When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property." Exodus 21:20-21 NAB

Anyway, I am no christian, so I should probably not be arguing over the interpretation of the Bible.. My point was that beating children is wrong, and if the Bible says it ins't, then the Bible is wrong.

edited because somehow the bible quotes contained emoticons (WTF?)
