Edited on Mon Feb-07-05 10:24 AM by UTUSN
Apologies for what the pic will do to everyone's breakfast. And get ready, it will never end: Deryk will pry the Fascist cudgel from his mudder's cold, dead fingers to carry on her hate. Yes, it's true, the extremes of political philosophies DO turn into each other.

Dr. Laura's Son Joining Special Forces

Sun Feb 6, 2:42 PM ET

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Tough talking radio host Dr. Laura Schlessinger (news - web sites)'s 19-year-old son will join the U.S. Special Forces later this year — an endeavor that could take him to the Middle East.

Schlessinger, famous for doling out conservative advice on her nationally syndicated call-in show, told about 300 people at a 425th Civil Affairs Battalion event on Saturday that she wasn't too worried about her son, Deryk Bishop.

"I brought my son up to be a warrior," she said. "I feel sorry for the mothers of the bad guys. And I just have a good feeling."

Bishop, who enlisted last year, joined his mother on stage and told the audience including U.S. Army reservists that he resents how Americans criticize the war without recognizing the sacrifices soldiers make — a theme echoed by his mother.

"Real people were fighting and I wanted to be part of that," Bishop said.

Excellent! Make it mandatory for every single right-winger send at least one kid off to war and/or have to go fight them personally. Let's see what tune they'd be singing then!

5. Since this "woman" hates gay people so fucking much
Edited on Mon Feb-07-05 10:32 AM by kgfnally
I hope her son come home physically well and psychologically destroyed. I hope she has to deal with it each and every day for the rest of her life, and I hope dealing with it destroys her as well.

I quite fervently hope he isn't physically harmed, because those wounds leave visible scars. I want no visible damage to him whatsoever, so by the time she finds out how damaged he really is when (if) he returns, it will be far, far too late to help in any way.

And no, I will not apologize for these comments. This woman hates people like me, hated people like me long before this misguided war, and will hate people like me long after it's all over. She, and hers, can just go home and die for all I care.

May she suffer a mother's truly painful loss ten thousand times over, and may it be a fresh hell for her each and every single time.

edited to change 'bitch' to "woman" because I didn't want to denigrate legitimate bitches the world over. This "woman" doesn't even rate an epithet.

13. considering that her rants are part of the reason
Edited on Mon Feb-07-05 10:47 AM by kgfnally
that people like me all over the country are reviled on a daily basis- and adding in the fact that bigots do quote her- no. I cannot agree. It's because of people like her that I can't get married, that I can't adopt- hell, it's because of people like her that I lost the career I was preparing for (at the hands of my own parents, by the way).

In some places, I'd get run out of town on a rail because of people like her (some of whom would likely be quoting her, among others). I am simply done having sympathy for such people for ANY reason "just because they're people, too".

Fuck 'em. I'm done being nice and I'm done letting these people talk out of both sides of their mouths. I'm fucking sick and tired of people expecting me and others like me to remain silent and take the abuse in the name of "getting along". If "Dr." Laura had her way, I'd be in a camp already.

SO she and hers can just okiss my ass, and I wish upon them all the misery and trauma that every other military family who has lost their son, or daughter, or father, or mother, has had. There are plenty of people there in Iraq who are against this war, caught up in the military machine, not wanting to be there. This womanj would hold her son up on a pedestal above those soldiers who paid the ultimate price just because they were against the war and went anyway. This is the type of woman who would say of the dead, "good, because the only people I want guarding MY son's back are the ones who WANT to be there," while at the same time whining about how much damage people who are against the war stateside are doing to our forces in Iraq.

Sorry that was so wordy, but the logic of her and hers defies logic.

This woman fervently wants me and people like me to just go away. That's not going to happen.

May she be visited by her son with all the misery she has inflicted upon others over her entire career. Is that better? May his deployment end with her abject and permenant misery. I care not how.

Am I being "nice" enough now?

20. I'm not wishing the guy dead.
Edited on Mon Feb-07-05 11:44 AM by kgfnally
I'm wishing that when he returns she will end up wishing he had died there or just never gone in the first place. I want the damage to reflect upon her in all conceivable ways.

No loss of life for her family. I want the lesson to last a long, long time. Preferably for the rest of their lives.

edited to add: if you go to the site that the hookah pic is on (here) and take a look at the 'comments' part of the article, there's a poster partway down claiming to be him, and others claiming to go to school with him, one of whom says they know him personally. Interestingly, at that time (if we assume these people are who they say they are), young Deryk was indeed Mr. Schlessinger, and appears to have since changed his name.

Family enmity and something to prove? Perhaps. I take back his half of what I've said here earlier. My guess is this is one confused and somewhat disappointed kid. Maybe his mom deserves more in light of that, but not at his cost.

His going there should still somehow cost her personally, though. It would only be just.

51. I happen to have read the offending transcript from Dr. Laura.
There is no evidence whatsoever that she hates gay people at all, much less so fucking much.

A good way to tell is if she says, "I hope their sons come home physically well and psychologically destroyed. I want it to be far, far too late to help in any way." Saying gay people can be immoral just like anybody else does suggest that there's such a thing as "morality," but it's not evidence of hating gay people.

6. Bob Dylan wrote "John Brown" just for such women.
Bob Dylan - John Brown Lyrics

"John Brown went off to war to fight on a foreign shore.
His mama sure was proud of him!
He stood straight and tall in his uniform and all.
His mama?s face broke out all in a grin.

"oh son, you look so fine, I?m glad you?re a son of mine,
You make me proud to know you hold a gun.
Do what the captain says, lots of medals you will get,
And we?ll put them on the wall when you come home."

As that old train pulled out, john?s ma began to shout,
Tellin? ev?ryone in the neighborhood:
"that?s my son that?s about to go, he?s a soldier now, you
know."
She made well sure her neighbors understood.

She got a letter once in a while and her face broke into a smile
As she showed them to the people from next door.
And she bragged about her son with his uniform and gun,
And these things you called a good old-fashioned war.

Oh! good old-fashioned war!

Then the letters ceased to come, for a long time they did not
come.
They ceased to come for about ten months or more.
Then a letter finally came saying, "go down and meet the
train.
Your son?s a-coming home from the war."

She smiled and went right down, she looked everywhere around
But she could not see her soldier son in sight.
But as all the people passed, she saw her son at last,
When she did she could hardly believe her eyes.

Oh his face was all shot up and his hand was all blown off
And he wore a metal brace around his waist.
He whispered kind of slow, in a voice she did not know,
While she couldn?t even recognize his face!

Oh! lord! not even recognize his face.

"oh tell me, my darling son, pray tell me what they done.
How is it you come to be this way? "
He tried his best to talk but his mouth could hardly move
And the mother had to turn her face away.

"don?t you remember, ma, when I went off to war
You thought it was the best thing I could do?
I was on the battleground, you were home . . . acting proud.
You wasn?t there standing in my shoes."

"oh, and I thought when I was there, god, what am I doing
here?
I?m a-tryin? to kill somebody or die tryin?.
But the thing that scared me most was when my enemy came close
And I saw that his face looked just like mine."

Oh! lord! just like mine!

"and I couldn?t help but think, through the thunder rolling
and stink,
That I was just a puppet in a play.
And through the roar and smoke, this string is finally broke,
And a cannon ball blew my eyes away."

As he turned away to walk, his ma was still in shock
At seein? the metal brace that helped him stand.
But as he turned to go, he called his mother close
And he dropped his medals down into her hand."

7. Wow...talk about a face for radio...
...still, I hope her son does not die or get seriously hurt. Paradoxically, I hope he doesn't have to kill or maim a bunch of "bad guys" and bereave their mothers, either.

War is hell, but the main thing people forget is that war is usually fairly stupid, too.

50. You can directly enlist for SF now
As explained to me by an instructor at the SF school:

Step 1: enlist in the Army for Special Forces MOS 18B (Weapons Specialist).

Step 2: attend Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Step 3: attend Basic Airborne School, also at Fort Benning.

Step 4: PCS to Fort Bragg, NC, and attend two pre-SFAS courses designed to essentially dump two years worth of infantry experience into your head in the space of a month.

Step 5: Attend the Special Forces Assessment and Selection Course. This is basically an audition for SF. If you blow it, you get one do-over; blow that and you go to an infantry company.

Step 6: If you pass SFAS, you attend another two-week knowledge-dump course.

Step 7: Your next stop is the Special Forces Qualification Course. Pass that and you go to SF Language Training at Fort Bragg. Once you graduate from that, you are assigned to an SF Operational Detachment A, or ODA--an "A-Team."

All of this takes about two years from the time you step off the bus at Fort Benning to the time you sign in to your SF company.

9. She brought her son up to be a fighter, not a warrior.
There is a difference in the perception of those words, and Dr. Sh*ttinger chose the word "warrior" with manipulative intent.

Yes, we have soldiers who are true warriors, and then we have soldiers who simply like to fight, who don't mind killing. Thank goodness they are few and far between, but to assign nobility to her son in such a forum, and with such a widespread audience, is staggeringly conceited.

which she rebuked a couple of years ago...all she talked about was the fact that her son attended an orthodox school and how observant they were as a family (she obviously forgot the commandment to honor her parents) yada...yada....yada....

Everything about this "woman" is done for marketing purposes. I would not be surprised if her precious Deryk find some way to get out of serving. Of course the public would know nothing about it.
