Your the Prez - What would you do about Iraq, SS, Environment, crime
And so on? From Indian Affairs to welfare, what would your plan be to get America back on track for all it's people (from gays to Indians, and so on down the line)?

What is YOUR vision of our collective selves through our government?

We all know we can do better than *, let's discuss.

And no, I don't have a bunch of ideas off hand which are concrete as of yet (which is why I am asking you - still researching details myself, so many areas the government controls and rules) but from what I have seen we can do better on all levels.

But if you were president, what would you do, what agenda would you push to congress, and how would you address the American people to get them on board (and we all could sure as hell do a better job then * on addressing the people, that guy is just...well pathetic in that realm.)

1. Here's one
We have three problems that can be addressed with one solution: crumbling infrastructure, lack of jobs (and the concomitant economic sluggishness), and lack of manufacturing.

So, we set up a latter day New Deal set of programs to put people to work rebuilding the infrastructure. Gets a lot of money into the economy (the right places), and gets our infrastructure up to date. Schools, highways, etc. Good time to push through a high speed rail system in the right areas, etc.

2. Something interesting in your post deep down
that I have always thought on.

We raise taxes to do as you suggest, that money goes to fellow Americans to do said work. Now compare this to lower taxes where people use the money to buy things made overseas...

In other words, tax dollars are mostly spent here and help us, whereas tax cuts may well end up being spent overseas buying cheaply made products from wal-mart and such.

That 'tax' is really not a tax at all, it is an investment in our society and helps more people (within limits of course, and under the right leadership).

So the * tax cut profits who in the long run?

3. That's a really good point, plus
the investments, beyond the jobs and $, serve our society directly.

Like rebuilding the railways for the 21st century, rather than the 19th.

7. Your Error (said in fun)
"...whereas tax cuts may well end up being spent overseas buying cheaply made products from wal-mart and such."

I wholeheartedly believe in the Clintonian idea of investing in America. However, I would like to point out an error in your remarks: Tax cuts do NOT end up spent on cheaply made products from Wal-Mart and the like. Not at all. Unless Wal-Mart is retailing Hummers and Lexus? Or Rolex? Or Bordeaux? Or the latest "Water Lillies" fad? The bottom-halfers (income-wise) who predominate Wal-Mart did not receive enough "tax cut" to do anything except, maybe, pay that late electric bill or finally get the kid to a dentist. Chances are, though, that all their tax cut did was buy a burger from the Dollar Deals at McDonalds...

12. Works perfectly fine with the right people in office
But if * hadn't been able to get his tax cuts, you know he would've found a way to shove it all down the throat of the military industrial complex.

4. My plan for Iraq
Stop thinking of the insurgents as terrorists. They are Resistance fighters. You don't negotiate with terrorists, but you DO negotiate with those resisting your occupation.

Sit down at a table and negotiate mutually agreeable terms of withdrawal.

Most importantly, you need to stop "patrolling for insurgents."

When you go patrolling places, people will shoot at you. And once they shoot at you, you consider them "insurgents."

Withdraw all troops from patrols and concentrate on ONLY securing the borders.

Leave ALL internal matters to the Iraqis.

Your concern is only to keep Iran and Saudi Arabia and others from invading, and perhaps stepping-in to prevent ethnic cleansing against the Kurds.

The insurgents should find this relatively agreeable, and will (hopefully) stop blowing-up the precious oil pipelines.

And if they DO blow it up, then let the Iraqis handle it.

It is THEIR oil, right?

5. The best thing in my town is a New Deal deal...
The CCC rebuilt a lot of the California Missions in as authentic a style as possible. The La Purisima Mission is now a State Park in Lompoc, and it is just about the only thing worth a damn in our city. It's the one place you can go and get away, and in many ways it's like stepping backwards in time. They've done an astonishing job at regaining the atmosphere of the period in the buildings, the livestock, etc.

All in all it's a hidden gem on the Central Coast, and 70 years ago the work helped pull us out of the recession, now 2 generations later, we're still enjoying the fruits of their labor.

Thank you FDR! You were the greatest.

11. I would like to add my own little stump speech (short version)
Edited on Mon Feb-07-05 08:28 PM by WLKjr
I agree totally that a "New Deal" type plan is greatly needed. I don't know if you noticed it or not but in the new budget plans AMTRAK is not even dealt a share of money from what I understand. This infuriates me to even type that. It's okay to give the airlines corporate welfare but don't give money to the railroads to help them do more business and do it more efficiently.

The number one problem that concerns me at the moment is education in this country. I say this becuase I believe that this is the beggining where problems start. When you have an large uneducated, unskilled population, many problems and crisis arise. Crime, teen pregnancy, abortion, drug use, homelessness, jobless, and poverty. When you have a highly skilled and highly educated workforce, these all decline dramatically because of a basic consensus among a people. Everyone, democrat or republican, green or independant, all want the same basic things; A home, a good job, and a little bit of money in the bank. The Economy does benifit from this more than anyone can even begin to comprehend.

The number two problem that concerns me is the lack of conservation going on in our country today. If you want to have tax relief, why not do a little bit of cohersing into starting to recycle things heavily. I am talking tax exemptions, refunds, whatever you want to call them, to anyone who recycles large amounts of materials. We have to face facts, The World is not using it's resources efficiently enough and there is a mass mis allocating of resources happing every second of everyday. I am talking setting up natwide recycling centers in everytown across the U.S. and having a way to provide 'tokens' of sorts to turn in at will for cash refunds. I realize this is already being done in most areas, but it should be on a larger scale and with a incentive to participate. Not only would this drive down the cost of production for goods made here in the US, but more profit could be made at the reduction of cost in materials, and not in the paychecks and jobs of US workers. I know for a fact this would put fire in the belly of wall street. Secondly, the nationwide promotion of alternative fuel vehicles, primarily Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicles and Highspeed Rail service. I would make it a priority to service every major city in the US with highspeed rail access by the end of my first term. I would work with congress and the american public to get this done. We would make it very cost effective for the consumer so that getting a train ticket between LA and NewYork roundtrip would be cheaper than buying a plane ticket one way. I would personally promote this way of travel by taking the train across the US for all of my travel as neccessary. I also have some things that I would throw in here for farmers, big and small.

I would also work with congress and the american public to create a new national public works initiatve that would be an inscentive to any young person wanting to attend college or university OF THIER CHOICE free of charge. One example of this public works project would include what I like to call the (when I am president) The National Highway and Waterway Beatifcation Act of 2030 witch would clean up our Highways and Waterways by cleaning up trash and planting vegitation and trees along our highways and waterways all across the U.S. Not only would this provide ample work for our nations younger generation but it would put money into thier pockets and also pay for thier college. Details of this plan are still being worked out in my mind at the moment, but I have a lot of vision for this project and believe it would be a great thing. I would also like to protect another million acres of land in the U.S.

As for jobs, I would also start many other public works projects across the U.S. I would set forth a goal along side the Highspeed Rail goal by to have everyhome in America equipped with wireless and fiberoptic communications for Telephone, Internet, and Televison service and would work with companies to make this affordable to even those who are not fortunate enough to have it now. I feel this would increase the speed of information across the U.S. and would also be a boon to education by making people more aware of thier surroundings and the world. I would aslo have nationwide urban beatificaition and updating in our cities. New Schools would be built in place of old ones, new homes and new stores, new roads and new water/sewer/power access, and much much more.

In order to keep jobs in the U.S., we have to become the great innovators and producers we once were. Here is where I come back to why we need to spend more and more on education everyday. I would provide incentives for companies to keep operations here, like getting invovled with recycled materials and giving refunds for using recycled materials. I have more incentives that are in the works for keeping companies here in the U.S.

I would make Healthcare no longer a matter of pay or die, but treat healthcare as a basic Human right. Health care would be free for those ages 0-18 and ages 65+. Cost would be minimal for those employeed at the time of need. Unemployeed workers would fall into the free category.

I would end homlessness and poverty in this country of ours. There is no reason EVER in the land of plenty that someone should be homeless or starving or jobless. The greatest thing you could ever do is to give someone pride in themeselves. I would get those who fall through the cracks back up on thier feet again, provide them a place to stay and help them get back into the work force, and back into school. Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day, but teach a man to fish, and he will eat for a lifetime. (There is a little bit of faith in me, but it's personal) Poverty would be a thing of the past by the end of my first term.

America would see a unprecidented period of peace and prosperity under my lead. Countries would admire us again as diplomacy would reign supreme. You cannot promote democracy at the point of a gun. You promote democracy by being a good example of it's principles and it's peoples determination. But that also means to speak softly and to carry a big stick. I would never let our nations security be number 2 on a list, it would be and always would be first priority. I belive the defense force of tommorow will have to be light, highly skilled, highly mobile, hi-tech/low-tech, and surgically precise.

Phew, my fingers hurt, and I am tired. Should I mention I would be the first president from Ohio in over 100 years by that time and one of the most popular??? :)

13. Good work...
I too think education is paramount.

Of course, Repuks don't like education - undereducated people are the life-blood of their party...

8. In order:
Edited on Mon Feb-07-05 07:39 PM by rzemanfl
Iraq-get out, suspend the Pottery Barn rule, don't try to fix anything, just get out.
Social Security-pay back the Trust fund by rolling back the * tax cuts, apply the same rules to unearned income as are applied to earned income when reducing a retiree's payments. This would mean that rich people might not get checks, too bad...its called Social Security, if you're secure, you don't need it. You had the insurance for your family when you were young, or if things didn't work out...count yourself lucky and don't bitch.
Environment-impose an engine size limit on all vehicles and light trucks, if someone wants to drive an Escalade they can, but they'd better be satisfied with acceleration and top speed about the same as the old VW bug. If a person has a legitimate need for a high-powered vehicle, say to tow a boat or a trailer, they would be required to obtain a Certificate of Need and would be limited to only a few thousand miles a year, for the rest of the time they can buy and drive an economy car. Enforce all the pre-* laws.
Crime-put a quota on prosecutors, for each non-violent drug offender they send to jail they must send one white collar criminal to jail, otherwise the drug offenders get sent to treatment programs.
Gays-none of the Federal government's business.
Indians-keep them from going to war with Pakistan.
Native Americans, I don't know...

9. What to do, what to do?
Iraq - Get out now

SS - Leave it alone

Environment - Turn everything back to the Clinton era.

Crime - Again, Clinton era, restore more police on streets plus serious rehab programs for prison inmates. Oh yeah, those energy guys laughing about Aunt Millie in California? I'd prosecute them along with Ken Lay.

10. So far - great ideas...
I would build upon the ideas already presented with additional ones:

Education is paramount to a democracy and the well being of a country. The more educated the citizenship - the more likely to contribute positively to the country. So I would insure proper funding to facilities, teachers, and 'extra-circular' programs like music, the arts, sports (the given) and to insure funding for college. I would also outlaw any fast food in schools – no MacDonalds, etc…

Next, with tax dollars going to build infrastructure as previously posted, I would revamp the health care system. Too much money is wasted in duplication of insurance companies and out-right fraud. With a revitalize work force, we would need to make sure health care is a given - not something to fight for or to go without. I have not thought of specifics on health care - it is a complicated issue. But I know that to feel you are 'covered' allows one to be more productive and fell better about society.

Then, pollution controls; implement strict pollution controls and enforce them. The ultimate goal – zero negative emissions of any kind. With a cleaner environment, our health issues go down as well.

Energy: implement solar farms and wind turbine systems. The ultimate goal – solar cell arrays on every roof.

Transportation – rail system all over the USA.

Iraq – get the hell out of there.

This is just a start.

*** Nice post by the way - we have to show these idiots how to run our country - they are killing our country. ***
