Catholic lay minister phone call to me
Just got a call from "Ohio" Caller ID 1-513-681-3148
.
The male caller asked for me by my given name and then identified himself as a Catholic lay minister ( from ??) and then

he then asked if I was of the Catholic faith.

I said, "no"

He said, "Oh I am very sorry to have bothered you" and he hung up.

Now here is the thing. The only plausible way that he got my given name is from political donation lists because all of my public utility, phones and etc. are still in my long departed husband's name only. And I sure don't live in Ohio.

So is there something going on that targets Catholic Democratic donors-- to pressure them or whatever?

Anyone know of this happening to others?

1. The Priest at our Texas Parish
Gave a 45 minute homily ( and he is not usually long winded ) damning anyone who dares to critize the President, and damning anyone that attacks "catholic priests" men of exceptional faith.

4. Do you still belong to this....
bullshit-addled, hate-filled group?

I'd have handed him my walking papers and told him I was reporting his ass to the IRS.

9. Yes, we still "belong" to the parish.
The Priest will be leaving before we do. It's our Parish, in our community, it's our church not his.

Take charge. This asshole needs to know that the parishioners make the rules, not him.

12. He has a legal obligation to say where he got your name
If he got it from a voter registration list, it is illegal for him to use it to solicit donations.

If he's going through the phonebook and looking for people whose names "sound Catholic" -- Ramirez, Rodriguez, O'Donnel, O'Donahue, etc., that's different.

(I don't mean to stereotype Catholics by ethnicity. That's why I put "sound Catholic" in quotes, because a name is a pretty flimsy way to determine someone's religion).

Now, if he got your name from some OTHER organizaiton, you might want to know that.

15. As soon as I said "no", he was outta there.
I tried calling the number a couple of times and just got constant ringing. no pick ups.

And of course I have no idea if he was fund raising (I doubt that) or trying to bully/ convert me.

My last name is not "catholic" sounding at all. So that is a non starter.
He sort of took me by surprise.

I would have been faster to the uptake if I had any idea that he was going to hang up so fast. Usually they are very persistent. :-)

18. Try calling people with phone numbers in sequence to yours
For example, if your number is 555-1234 then call 1230, 1231, 1232, 1235, 1236, etc. See if any of them were called.

Look yourself up in the phone book and call the people before and after you in the listings.

Use InfoSpace to do a reverse-look-up of your address and call other people on your street to see if they've been called.

Some (or all) of that is probably too much trouble for you to go to.

But you know, I bet that there's gotta be a provision in the new telemarketing law that says even though political and non-profit organizations are allowed to call you, they have to properly identify themselves.

I would definitely complain to the FCC about that.

8. They are Eucharistic Ministers. Trained to help with mass.
I am one. The duties only include helping with the Eucharist in mass.
Nothing outside of mass.

16. Not always true.
My Dad was a Eucharistic Minister and he also delivered Communion and ministered to the ill in hospitals and their homes. His duties as an EM were not limited either to during Mass or to just pass out Communion. Methinks the duties of EMs may vary by parish or diocese.

10. yes there is...but it is a relatively new thing...
http://www.usccb.org/laity/laymin/faq.htm

What is lay ministry?
Ministry is the way in which the Church continues what Christ began and still intends, namely, the salvation of humanity and the transformation of the world. All baptized and confirmed Christians receive a call and gifts enabling them to participate in this mssion. When lay people carry out Christ's work as priest, prophet, and king in their own proper way through public activity authorized by the Church, we call this lay ministry.

In recent years, a growing number of lay persons have prepared for and been appointed to positions of service and leadership in the church. Some of the recent documents of the U. S. Catholic bishops refer to such ministers, who often work full-time for the church, as lay ecclesial ministers.
