7. I can't even watch that movie anymore
That would be like watching a screening of Schindler's List, from 1938 Nazi Germany (if such a thing were possible).

But you are correct. That movie, like Network, is a s prophetic as it is insane.

Network, in fact, has been rendered tame and boring by the turn of events.

But it is still instructional and awareness-raising, if having been superseded by reality.

9. I sat through "Bob Roberts" for the second time...
...during Bush's first term. It made my blood run cold. There are certain movies that get more horrifying with repeated viewings. "Bob Roberts" is one of them. For some reason I find movies like "The Stepford Wives" and the 1979 version of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" more and more disturbing these days. Basically, any movie where previously normal people suddenly turn into mindless drones really gets under my skin.

33. You'll be blown away
The first time I saw it was in the mid-nineties and I thought it was funny, but sort of "out-there". I couldn't imagine a weirdo like Roberts ever gaining such a following.

But now, after the rise of BushWorld, it is downright terrifying. There is a scene where Roberts takes off on his motorcycle, and skids and falls off. He's not injured, but his bodyguards erupt in hysteria, screaming "He's down, he's down!" When I saw it, I thought of Bush and his many bicycle falls.

8. About political campaigns? Altman's Nashville is good
Rented that recently. Mostly comic, a little tragic. Kind of absurd, like you're laughing at these people until something happens that you know you shouldn't be laughing at, but they still seem ridiculous.

Maureen Farrell-Mind control has been going on in the US since 1953. The Manchurian Candidate has some elements of realpolitik in it and therefore gets my vote. Here's the link to Maureen Farrell's piece.

29. I think of Brazil too - Deniro reminds me of Harry Reid
Edited on Wed Feb-09-05 06:56 AM by applegrove
I think of Brazil too - the part where Deniro has to sneak in to the apartment because he has intercepted a call that the air conditioner is broken - and he gets dressed in black and sneaks in to fix it (in a timely fashion). And the bureaucracy's hunt for him because he (by virtue of the fact that he fixes appliances in a free and timely fashion by slipping in at night) threatens the establishment (okay they are a bureaucracy). But they have to go after him because he is good and efficient and makes the bureaucracy look bad and threatens them.

That scene reminded me of Harry Reid. When you start going after heros because they make you look bad - and you are all invested in how things look - not how they are. Harry Reid could be the best American leader there ever was - but you will never know if you "kill him" for trying to do a good job.

You guys have to rent Brazil and think Harry Reid!!

35. Bingo.
I was wondering if anyone else would see that.

I wasn't thinking of Reid in particular, but of the culture of assassinating anyone from the other side who appears to be doing a good job, even if they are doing a good job for the people you are supposed to be supporting.

20. FRAILTY--angel tells guy to kill demons with help of kids
One kid thinks dad is nuts, and the other thinks whatever dad wants must be swell.

If you haven't seen it, it's a chilling metaphor for the Bush years.

I started thinking about that right after 9/11.

25. Starship Troopers
Replace extraterrestrials with "terrorists" and you've essentially got an hour and a half of FOX news. The fact that it's fictional and a touch more campy than Britt Hume makes it entertaining though.

I don't get the Manchurian Candidate though. Why would Manchurian Global need an elaborate plan to use brain implants to gain control of a vice presidential candidate, when all they need to do is appoint an ex-member of their board of directors? Real life corruption is much more transparent than the sneaky conspiracies theory of cinema.

34. Anybody watch Black Adder?
It's a toss up between W as the Prince Regent, or W as Baldrick ( specifically where Baldrick ends up as a lord).

But seriously folks, when the Watergate people are saying 'Damn, that's f*cked up', there's a real problem.

or maybe W as Mr. Bean.

More I think about it, it comes closer to the fascist overtones in Starship Troopers ( the movie ).
