Who do YOU think Deep Throat is???
I just finished watching "All the President's Men" for the first time. Very timely viewing, I must say.

Now it's killing me to know who Deep Throat is and I only had a passing interest before.

Apologies if this thread has been done in GD previously, but I'm curious as to your theories.

3. I just bought All The President's Men on DVD
and I've seen it several times, and love the movie. The young woman who helped me track it down in the piles of crappy drama movies was clueless about it.

I'm gonna have to wait until DT dies.

4. Am I mistaken or did I read somewhere on GD that
someone thought that Ford is Deep Throat? I didn't look at the post well enough to see if they were serious or not and why they thought so.

24. I think I posted that
I had read somewhere someone speculating it could be Ford. Honestly, he did have the most to gain but I doubt it could have been him. He'd never had made it in the parking garage without falling and hurting himself.

37. I would think it too...
except that he doesn't appear to be near death.

But I always thought it was strange that Junior gave Woodward so much access -- and even the freedom to publish some not-so-flattering stuff -- as Woodward was owed something.

And GWB did have political ambitions and good reason to want to bring Nixon down. Nixon was actually rather liberal compared to the radical righties like GWB, and was hated by many of them.

I would LOVE for it to be him, but I actually think it was someone like Mark Felt.

Apparently we'll know soon!!!

35. Yanno apparently he can be traced as being in town for 7of the 8 meetings.
And Woodward said if anyone wanted to find out who it is all they would have to do is determine who was in town during the meetings. He said when we find out we will realize why it was so important to him to keep his identity hidden.

He has been hinting that we would be shocked. Also He said that Hal resembled the real deepthroat. I rented this a couple of days ago. Hal looks a lot like bush. LOL. Plus i like thinking about the GOP's reaction to the Pres.'s dad being THE guy. The mentions on the tape of the Texan's and the Cubans and all the links of both Nixon and bush to the Kennedy assas. Makes ya wonder.

15. I've long thought
that Deep Throat never really existed. Some of the claims made, like the business about a marked Washington Post being delivered to Bernstein's door simply couldn't have happened that way. (He lived in a high rise apt building, all the WPs were dropped off at the front desk and then delivered to the individual apartments, so no one could have known which particular paper would go to which person.) His apartment faced an interior courtyard, so the idea of marking his window so that it could be seen by Deep Throat is also suspicious.

There's just a lot of not-quite-believable aspects to the whole Deep Throat thing. I suspect they got a certain amount of inside information, and then invented the whole DT person because it would sell the book.

Supposedly, the DT character was nowhere to be found in the first version of the book proposal.

Every time I see "All the President's Men" on TV I hold my breath towards the end because I'm still not convinced Nixon will resign.

32. I Always Accepted Woodward's Explanation . . .
. . .that it was an amalgam of people. The way he explained it, many years ago, is that these were insiders who didn't like what was happening and turned on the Nixon WH. They each provided some clues, but wouldn't even corroborate one another. That way there was no path to any one of them.

That always seemed logical to me, since any one person who knew as much as DT was supposed to know, would have been traceable from within the WH. Deep cover would be reinforced by numbers, i think.

33. Bob Woodward has said it is one person
not a composite. And the obit in the Washington Post has supposedly already been written because Deep Throat is supposedly near death. If this is true then I can think of one of two people (that are well known): Rehnquist or Ford. Although I would think Ford would have had more access to the type of information that DT disclosed so I don't think it is Rehnquist. Or it could be someone that is very ill and no one has thought of because they were not a well known public figure. In any event I was alive during Watergate and I have always wondered. Should be interesting.

38. I'll Find My Videotape
I have a tape of Woodward being interviewed on the 10th anniversary of Nixon's resignation. (I think 60 Minutes, but not sure.) That's where he said it was an amalgam. So, i'll try to find it around the house and create and MP3 of it. Then, you'll know why i said that in my first post.
