in this morning's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. (Its really about Mrs Bush** "leading" the gangs thing)

Street gangs and the pathologies that create them are a complex phenomenon in modern America. Anyone who takes them on needs to be more than "a good role model."
Niceness is no substitute for experience with the conditions that drive young people into violent gangs. An initiative without that kind of know-how at the top is doomed to operate on only a symbolic level. The president obviously loves his wife, but he didn't do her any favors by putting her in charge of such an important effort. What's next -- Barbara and Jenna Bush running the Department of Education? <snip>

... that's about all there is to NCLB, and this gang effort looks about as shallow as "Just say no to gangs." Sounds simple, but try making it work. It sure worked well in the 80's with Nancy Reagan. /sarcasm
