Al Franken says Brit Hume should resign.
Edited on Wed Feb-09-05 02:07 PM by Eric J in MN
Says Brit Hume intentionally cobbled together quotes from 1935 speech by FDR to mislead viewers.

Brit Hume was trying to persuade viewers that FDR wanted to privatize Social Security.

In reality, FDR was talking about IRAs in addition to Social Security.

The FDR speech:

(edit: I originally described the FDR speech as a letter)

2. Your billboard reminded me - does anyone have a photo
of the Emperor's new yacht? Think all the farmers losing subsidies, college kids losing grants and loans, the poor people who are losing health care, etc., etc., etc. would really appreciate seeing what we do have money for. I hate this administration so much.

Can't recall just how many they feel are necessary for the white house crowd...quite a few...and all being built overseas.

I cannot express how much I hate this administration. Runnin' out of words!!

3. Brit Hume should resign because he's BLATANTLY BIAS against Democrats.
Noone with such an obvious bias should be on any broadcast news network.

Hume is a Bushmoonie.

12. Great show today
One of the best and most cogent in a while. Al's right, the Repugs have gone COMPLETELY OVER THE LINE after the "election." This IS disgusting. What they are doing is beneath contempt.

18. Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, and Alan Colmes, all do tv and radio.
It isn't clear why Al Franken can't do both.

13. I believe what FDR was refering to...
Edited on Wed Feb-09-05 01:57 PM by Opposite Reaction
...was the fact that SS would have to be paid for by the states and the fed UNTIL worker contributions paid into the system reached the level sufficient to cover the costs. This situation existed ONLY at the START of the SS plan, and then would NOT have to be repeated. Hume took the quotes out of context and out of order, to completely pervert the meaning.

Hume deliberately lied. He is not a pundit, he is an anchor. He lied, he should be forced to resign.

(Added later) OK, here is a link to the Media Matters article on this:

http://mediamatters.org/items/200502040010

And a quote:

"But Roosevelt was not advocating that the present system of guaranteed Social Security benefits "ought to ultimately be supplanted by self-supporting annuity plans." Rather, he was proposing that both guaranteed Social Security retirement benefits and voluntary annuities would eventually eliminate the need for a different fund which was established to provide pension benefits to Americans who were already too old in 1935 to contribute payroll taxes to the Social Security system."<\b>

16. Apparently, William Bennet repeated the bogus
spin about FDR.

And William Bennet is the author of "The Book of Virtues."

Doen't seem real virtuous to mislead people about FDR so they will be conned into supported a plan which will ultimately result in more seniors in poverty.

19. Hume, is one ugly man, frustrated, constipated, impotent, lying, fascist!
A do and say anything for money piece of shit. Hume gets off like so many neo-con's by hurting others, he's one mean asshole.

This is all quite obvious, by watching him speak, listening to his lies, seeing his hateful emotions, his mannerisms, the arrogance from his own words and knowing his history and backround.

Hume typifies the republican bias Fox news pigs!

23. there has been tragedy in Hume's life.
I certainly don't think they have specific bearing on this but his son committed suicide some years back amid rumors of homosexuality. I do not know how much of it is true, what role Hume played in his son's unfortunate decision.

20. Read David Brock's book "Blinded by the Right"
and you'll find out just how biased Hume is. He was a HUGE behind the scenes player for the repukes while they spent their 8 year quest to get Clinton out of office. Hume was there doing whatever he could to help. Yes indeed, he should resign, but won't. Faux News will not ask him to either. He just did what they all do on a daily basis. LIE.
