from Sen. Coburn's mouth: slicone breast implants make you healthier

Boob of the Day:

Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK), a new member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, was at last week's meeting on a bill restricting class-action suits. "You know," he said, "I immediately thought about silicone breast implants and the legal wrangling and the class-action suits off that. And I thought I would just share with you what science says today about slicone breast implants. If you have them, you're healthier than if you don't. That is what the ultimate science shows...In fact, there's no science that shows that silicone breast implants are detrimental and, in fact, they make you healthier."
-------------------------------

name these scientists that think breast implants are healthier!!!

Coburn must be making money off of faux breasts in some way.

I'd like to stick a slicone breast implant down his throat.

75. Don't know why, BUT MAY ACTUALLY BE TRUE.
Brinton, L.A., et al. (2001). "Mortality among augmentation mammoplasty patients." Epidemiology, 12(3), 321-326.

"...women who underwent elective cosmetic surgery generally were healthier than their peers in the general population."

Remember, we're liberals and that means keeping an open mind.

76. GENERALLY healthier.
I suspect that the population who had silicone leaking into their body were the ones who weren't as healthy as people without them. Even if some are healthier for the time being, it takes nothing away from those who have suffered and continue to suffer from health problems as a result of the material.

I have no numbers to back up my claim, but the people I know who have had elected cosmetic surgery are all very body conscience...at the gym all the time, etc.

Why this Representative would mention silicone implants specifically is beyond me though...there's probably some silicone implant company based out of OK that is in the process of begging for FDA clearance.

18. "silicone" / "silicon"
"Silicon is a chemical element, the basic stuff of which microchips are made. Silicones are plastics and other materials containing silicon, the most commonly discussed example being silicone breast implants. Less used by the general public is “silica“: an oxide of silicon."

28. Question. Does anyone know for a fact that he's wrong?
The science regarding silicone breast implants is still out, though it looks as of now that they don't significantly increase risk for the set of conditions for which they initially withdrawn from the market when compared to saline implants.

Further, and I'm sure this is what Coburn is suggesting, that there is some evidence of decreased breast cancer risk in implant patients.

Now, like I said, the science isn't totally in - and I wouldn't advocate for these things to be back on the market until the research and trials are complete, but I don't like a public pillorying without facts.

30. There is a likely a study floating that shows this; however,
I think that there is probably due to the demographic of the average implantee and whomever they (perhaps the manufacturers of silicone breast implants???) used as a control group.

A collection of 20-30 year old strippers with implants are probably healthier than a collection of 60 year old women who don't have implants.

Women who get implants are probably generally on the youthful side of things - that's all I'm saying before I get singed by flame.

32. What you're saying is, of course, true
But I highly doubt that is at issue here. I know that the FDA, IOM and several private research universities, Harvard among them, have done studies on the issue, and for them to fall to such selection bias or other simple epidemiologic error would be unthinkable.

Having said that, Harvard, if I recall correctly, last used the Nurse's study data as of the early 90's, so I'd love to see an updated report. Those younger women who've gotten silicone implants are middle age and beyond by now. And, again, I have no interest in silicone implants per se, but if sufficient time passes where sound studies can demonstrate their safety, and people want them, then it's probably time to at least evalute the situation anew.

66. Here's the problem...studies are funded by Dow Corning
even the Jama article was a complete DODGE..I worked with an MD that evaluated over 300 breast implant cases...independent studies demonstrate that the larger the implants the more silicone leaches out of them i.e. they don't even need to rupture to cause symptoms.

The way the studies have ditched this issue is to claim that the implants don't cause scleroderma...that is NOT THE ISSUE..the issue is that they cause SOME form of collagen disorder which may, not yet,HAVE a name..the symptoms suffered by the women from the earlier implants i.e. SICCA symptoms are real...they are joint pain, metallic taste in one's mouth headache and other symptoms. The deliberate obfuscation has not helped much.

71. that's insane
Women with implants can't effectively conduct a self examination and the implants interfere with mammograms. I wouldn't be surprise if such a study existed, but you can't bet it was paid for by companies that sell silicone implants. Doctors for years insisted that menopausal women take estrogen, when there was no scientific evidence supporting it's efficacy. The research and application of medicine in our society is misogynistic in may ways. Go ahead and stick foreign objects and chemicals in in your own body if you want, but quit conspiring with corporate American to destroy women's bodies. It's horrifying.
By the way, this is the same Senator who performed an involuntary sterilization on a welfare mother. Would you also justify that in terms of "health"?

31. WTF is he talking about?
I would hope that a practicing doctor would know better. I'm a layman, and think it's pretty logical to think that implanting silicone bags that can burst is more dangerous than not implanting them.

36. Our other Okla Senator & 4 of our 5 Reps are just as nutty, fundies
& Raptors who all drank the koolaid in communion a LONG time ago. Sen. Inhofe & Rep. Istook are always coming up with some embarrassingly backwoods-ass statement or other, and remember that we've also had Steve Largent and Don Nickles in Washington. What a bunch - and most of this state loves 'em. It is hard to be stuck here and I'd take my kid & escape, if I could afford a tank of gas!

from Oklahoma who are far more qualified to be a United States Senator. It's a damn shame they can't get elected.

Good luck with that tank of gas, the 21st century awaits you. :hi:

38. you all misunderstand Coburn
you all forget that what is at the forefront of this man's mind...
I think everyone here is missing the main point Coburn is trying to make... After his statement warning that "lesbianism is so rampant in some of the schools in SE Oklahoma that they'll only let one girl go to the bathroom" I think it's OBVIOUS that he only meant it to be aimed towards the gay community, urging them to be healthy and whatnot... And in his own words, I urge you to "now, think about it!"

this man is thinking that "if we can get these lesbians some breast implants, more men will find them attractive. And if more men find them appealing, then maybe they themselves will find a man, and therefore stop being homosexual"

afterall, they ARE running rampant through their schools in OK. ;-)

50. What a fucking tool
How do these idiots get re-elected.............oh, he's from Oklahoma.

I challenge this "moran" to come up with one shred of credible scientific evidence that backs this ridiculous claim up. My best guess is that it is backed up by some pseudo-scientific right wing "think" tank (there's an oxymoron for you, "right wing think tank") or some "faith based" organization that still thinks the story of noah's ark is true.

I'm so damned lucky to have been born, raised and lived a great portion of my 55 years in New York. If I had to live in the regressive, uneducated confines of one of these Red States I'd kill myself.

This man should have a psychiatric evaluation, I believe he's not mentally fit enough to complete his duties in the Senate.

Rx for Doctors: A Dose of Humanity

By Al Kamen
Monday, February 7, 2005; Page A19

Weird Science

Speaking of doctors, physician-Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), a new member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, was at last week's meeting on a bill restricting class-action suits. "You know," he said, "I immediately thought about silicone breast implants and the legal wrangling and the class-action suits off that.

"And I thought I would just share with you what science says today about silicone breast implants. If you have them, you're healthier than if you don't. That is what the ultimate science shows. . . . In fact, there's no science that shows that silicone breast implants are detrimental and, in fact, they make you healthier."

So bigger really is better? Who knew?

Biography

Tom A. Coburn, M.D. was elected to the U.S. Senate November 2, 2004.

<snip>

After the family business was sold, Coburn changed the course of his life by returning to school to become a physician. Again he emerged as a leader, becoming President of his class at the University of Oklahoma Medical School where he graduated in 1983. He then did his internship in general surgery at Saint Anthony's Hospital in Oklahoma City and family practice residency at the University of Arkansas, Fort Smith.

Dr. Coburn returned to Muskogee where he specializes in family medicine, obstetrics and allergy. Dr. Coburn and his associates serve more than 15,000 patients for whom he has personally delivered almost 4,000 babies.

I can't believe Senator Boob is a physician!

77. Awwww...don't feel bad!
I'm from PA and currently live in VA -- there are plenty of loony tunes to go around. But I do have to say, Coburn takes the looniness (is that a word?!) to new levels. I watched Carson once on Meet the Press and wasn't too terribly impressed; but was he truly THAT bad to lose to this wacko?

I am just about to fucking lose my mind!!!! This goddamned QUACK - how in the hell can he say this?!?! EVERYTHING I have ever learned about implants in general - they impede imaging on mammograms - you can't do a complete self-exam - among other risks, make them NOT a good thing to have unless you absolutely need them. In my book, that means for reconstuction, post-mastectomy. If for vanity, you are risking your health!!
I AM SO FUCKING SICK OF THESE GODDAMNED REPUBLICANS SAYING THAT THE SKY IS GREEN WITH PINK POLKA DOTS, SAYING IT WITH A STRAIGHT FACE! But, should I be more angry at the IDIOTS who believe them?!

81. He's an MD who hates women. Read this!
(Plus he's taken big bucks from Dow Chemical, maker of the silicon implants, according to open secrets.org)

Sept. 13th, 2004 cached document from infobong.com:

Good gravy, I feel like I'm newsblogging up a storm tonight, but Salon.com has a crazy story on Tom Coburn, the Republican candidate for the Oklahoma Senate seat, the same guy who supports capital punishment for doctors who perform abortions.

"According to records obtained by Salon, Coburn filed an apparently fraudulent Medicaid claim in 1990, which he admitted in his own testimony in a civil malpractice suit brought against him 14 years ago by a former female patient. The suit alleged that Coburn had sterilized her without her consent... Coburn also revealed under oath that he had charged the procedure to Medicaid -- despite knowing that Medicaid, also known as Title 19, does not cover the cost of sterilization for anyone under age 21."

I hope Oklahomans can distinguish between the evil of liberalism and the evil of sterilizing a poor young woman without her consent. The Sooner State elected a Democrat Brad Henry for governor over former Seattle Seahawk and Republican Steve Largent in 2002, so maybe they exercise some caution when they pick their ultra-right politicians.
