13. Whorie Kurtz says the bloggers went too far in digging into
his personal life. Wolf agrees. They say there is nothing wrong with Gannon wearing his politics on his sleeves. Afterall, a lot of reporters,,even LIBERAL reporters wear their politics on their sleeve. They said that Jeff should have acknowledged his biased bent. But them Whorie and Wolfie (I wear kneepads, therefore I am)
Blitzer agreed that Jeff does let his political affiliation be known. So. It's okay then. :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke:

Edited on Wed Feb-09-05 06:03 PM by TwoSparkles
OHMY!!!!

I can't believe what I just heard on CNN.

Howard Kurtz and Blitzer were discussing Gannon. They mentioned Gannon's ties to Talon News and the Republican site that is run by a Texas Republican. I thought they were going to blast Gannon, but then Kurtz said this,

"I really don't think the issue here is Gannon's politics. He makes his politics clearly known. The issues is did the bloggers go too far in revealing his personal information."

Then Wolf tried to minimize the entire thing...

"I was a White House correspondent and many reporters wear their politics on their sleeve. What is the big deal here?"

I cannot believe this horsesh*t!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

19. Why were they told to whitewash.?
Were they told to muzzle this story to keep the White House happy?

Listening to this, I was just mortified!!

Gannon is a very serious story about the White House breaching public trust and confidence--with planted propaganda. CNN turned this story into a referendum on the bloggers, and their voracious appetite for ruining people!

Frick!

...however, I had no idea that CNN was in so deep. I realized CNN was "entertainment journalism", and that no effort to engage in real journalism was being made. However, I didn't realize that CNN was in bed with the White House.

Why would CNN do this?

I'm sorry to be so naive--but really--what is the motivation for catering to the Republicans?

Is CNN run by right-wingers? Is CNN kow towing to the administration to gain access to interviews/scoops?

Why would they do this?

...and I'm fairly certain that I can't get into a White House briefing!!

They personally know each and every reporter in that room.

Oh please, are we supposed to believe that Gannon is just another guy wanting to ask a question, and that the White House isn't always completely familiar with everyone in the room?

Yeah, right.

This administration practically built a fortress around DC for the inauguration, but we're supposed to believe that there's a revolving door into the White House briefings--and that the White House is not responsible for who is sitting in those chairs?

43. I just emailed
Thanks for the link.

"CNN missed the boat on the Gannon story. The issue is not "why the bloggers investigated his credentials." The issue is "why the White House did NOT investigate his credentials,” which appear to be nonexistent. The fact that he's using a fake ID, has fake credentials, and apparently has not had a background check, should signal a security problem, at a minimum.

The fact that the White House doesn't care if he's involved in the gay military sex industry and is completely unqualified as a journalist, so long as he parrots the RNC talking points, brings into doubt the integrity of the White House press briefings (which, if I recall correctly, are funded by taxpayers, not campaign contributions).

The fact that CNN is not asking those questions beings into doubt the integrity of your own newsroom."

47. I sent him this:
I was fascinated by your coverage of the "Jeff Gannon" story and how you made the the "persecution" of Mr. "Gannon" the story.

Tell me, is it standard practice for the White House to issue press credentials day after day to someone using a fictitious name, someone claiming to be a "journalist" with no degree in journalism and no experience?

Are the type of "questions" asked by Mr. "Gannon" which were really more a statement of his personal opinion standard among true professionals?

Why didn't you cover his "news" stories posted on his website, which were almost complete plagiarism of the official White House talking points?

Do you not think that his gay escort service and gay porn websites are relevant given the fact that Mr. Gannon carried water for the Bush administration's anti-gay agenda?

Yes, I am sure that many journalists have their own political biases. But the true professionals do try to put those aside and objectively report the news. You have much it appears in common with the infamous Mr. "Gannon".

42. Never mind - it's up
http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0502/09/wbr.01.html

BLITZER: Is there any evidence that there's a connection, that the White House put him up to this to throw these kind of questions whether to Scott McClellan or to the president? Any evidence of wrongdoing, first of all, on the part of the White House?

KURTZ: No evidence whatsoever. I talked to Scott McClellan about this today, the White House spokesman. He said, first of all, President Bush didn't know who Jeff Gannon was when he called on him at that news conference.

But McClellan knows who he is. He calls on him at White House briefings from time to time. He says that there are a lot of people in the White House press room who have strong opinions and sometimes put them into their questions and it's not his job as the press secretary to be deciding who can get into the White House and who can't based on their political views.

Gannon, by the way, says, sure, he's very conservative. He makes no bones about that. But he thinks that a lot of the reporters in the White House press room are liberal, and he provides some balance.

BLITZER: What's the name of the organization, the news organization, he reported for. And what political connections did you discover may or may not exist to that news organization?

KURTZ: Well, he writes for a site called Talon News, which appears to be kind of a straight news site. But all of the stories that he writes also appear on a site that's called GOPUSA, which, as you might expect, is a conservative site. In fact, it's motto is: We're bringing the conservative message to America.

And both of those sites are owned by a man named Bobby Eberle, who is a Texas Republican activist in the state of Texas. So the issue here isn't really Jeff Gannon's ideology. He's the first to tell you that he comes at journalism from a conservative perspective. The issue I think is, should some of his liberal critics, these liberal bloggers, have started investigating his personal life in an effort to discredit him?

It's fine to disagree with his politics, but did they go too far, I think a lot of people are asking, in dragging in some of this personal stuff?

BLITZER: I used to be a White House correspondent for many years, sat through numerous briefings. There are plenty of journalists that wear their politics on their sleeve, liberals, conservatives. What's wrong with journalists having these kind of views, being advocacy journalists, if you will?

KURTZ: I personally don't think there's anything wrong with it, as long as they make clear what their views are, as Jeff Gannon clearly did.

A lot of people are questioning, well, why does this guy have White House press credentials? Because he doesn't write for a newspaper or magazine. Everything he writes is simply online. But in the age of blogging, that's hardly unusual. And he doesn't have a permanent -- what's called a hard pass. He just gets cleared into the White House on a day-to-day basis, which is a privilege that is pretty much open to any journalist.

So I think it's absolutely fair game to critique his stories, to argue with what he writes, to question his views. And he does that to other members of the press as well. But what precipitated his resignation is that he says that on behalf -- out of concern for his family -- and he told me last week that he had been threatened, that he had been stalked -- this has gotten so personal that he felt he needed to step down as the White House correspondent for Talon News.

BLITZER: And it does come within the context of some of the other embarrassments, Armstrong Williams and some other issues, which we won't get into right now.

But Howard Kurtz doing some digging, doing some reporting for us -- thanks very much, Howard Kurtz.

KURTZ: Thank you.

are going to hard to expose and explosive story and they're to blame? They showed he is using a fake name, works for a fake paper, has a fake degree and is tied heavily to Repukes he's suppose to be covering. Me I want the story looked into harder. I want to know how up the WH chain the reporter plant was known. I want to know whos idea it is to use fake journalist in press conferences. This idea of the free press is at stake. Instead of the free press investigating that chastize? And the bloggers are to blame? This is why bloggers exist. Because the old world press is dead. TV news is dead. It's propaganda for the weak minded. CNN couldn't have tracked this story and done the investigation if it tried.
