Hardly. The poll trumpeted far and wide yesterday by CNN, USAT, and the right wing blogosphere was based on a sample constructed by Gallup that contained 37% Republicans, 35% Independents, and only 28% Democrats.

You read that correctly.

Self indentification with a particular party tends to coincide with current events.

Unlike pollsters such as Zogby, Gallup does not weight its polls based on pre-determined party-ID figures.

Before and after the Democratic Convention, Dem self identification was markedly higher in Gallup polls.

Right now is a good time for the GOP, a positively recieved Inaugural, SOTU, and Iraqi elections, as with most other bumps Bush has gotten during his administration, his approval rating will probably drop back down toward 50% as time goes on.

Also, I would guess that those people that self identified as Independents would fall disproportionately Democratic if forced to choose between GOP and DNC.

If the LeftCoaster had access to the number he quoted, I'm sure he has access to the other number as well.
