I want to thank the few errr White Male DUers that have posted the last couple of days with their complaints of how us poor white dudes have it so bad. Reverse Discrimination keeps popping up in their sad sad world and they keep using it as a crutch for their poor miserable lives.

Admittedly, I am fascinated by their shrieks and have spit out mouthfuls of kool-aid while reading their angst filled posts. Hence my new hobby... Finding whiny white guy stories.

Here's a little piece I just found on Google that takes on the great Bob Herbert of the New York Times. If you've followed my earlier thread ( http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3075876 ) you'll probably notice that the tone of this piece mirrors the tone of some of the posts in that thread. Also note the underlying racism in the piece about Herbert.

My life is so horrible, what with the good job, the almost paid for house, the two cars, three pets, 9 guitars, nice TV's and stereos. Everyone knows i should have even more. Admit it! You know it's true. I should be independently wealthy and happier than i already am, and if we white guys weren't persecuted like we are, all of this would have happened.

You know it! I know it! Everyone knows it! And you keep picking on me. You just don't understand how bad all this persecution makes me feel!

17. Affirmative action needs to be revamped

I am an Asian American, and I feel that those "whiny white guys" DO have a point. The crux of the matter is that this is the 21st century, and it's been decades since the civil rights bill was passed. I feel that the issue isn't about white vs blacks( or other minorities) anymore, but rather poor vs. rich. It's more about classism than it is about racism. Why should a poor Black guy(or some other poor minority) deserve something over a poor White guy, just because of skin color? This doesn't make much sense to me. In such cases, since the poor White guy and poor Black guy both come from disadvantages positions, the issue should not be race, but rather what they bring to the table. If one is more qualified than the other, then clearly in such a case, the qualified individual MUST and SHOULD be at an advantage over the less qualified individual.
I believe that if POVERTY is addressed such that it encompasses both poor blacks and whites, I believe that more Whites will come to our party, rather than leave it. It seems to me that more and more Whites are leaving the party, simply because of the AA issue. To put it bluntly, democrats cannot ignore Whites, because they're after all the majority in this country.
I'm not saying that racism does not exist in this country. It does, of course. But both issues of poverty and race should be tackled, and that democrats need to make sure that poor Whites are not ignored. There are many rags to riches stories--people who made it all the way to the top even though they had things going against them. John Edwards can be considered one. Heck, even Dick Cheney and Condie Rice are some good example. But making it to the top from the bottom is not easy. Simply speaking, the American Dream, is something that can be reached by very few people. However, we can make things easier for everybody, no matter what the background. One way would be Affirmative Action for poor people.
I don't believe AA should apply to Kobe Bryant's son or MLK's children, because I'm sure they're successful. It should help the poor.
This is no way meant to be a racist comment. I understand that racism does exist in this country. I'm of South Asian origin myself.
