HELP: Who were the other reporters busted for 'payola'?
I know Armstrong Williams, and of course Gannon is in the mix. But I seem to recall another name crossing the wires, someone pimping the Bush social security plan for cash. Can you help me with names? Are there more I can't remember?

Many thanks.

8. Gallagher got $21,000 for promoting the marriage initiative
from HHS. Sinceno bill or law was involved, she is not being fired by Universal Press. However, she did defend Bush's man-woman definition. I am not exactly sure that Universal Press was entirely correct.

McManus was paid $10,000 to promote the same marriage initiative by HHS.

It sound like the "initiative" was to exclude gay couple getting civil licenses to me. But that is just me. On the other hand, why would you pay "journalists" to advocate marriage when that is what they do.

10. Thanks for that.
I added a link to a story about how press releases from the WH have been aired as straight news stories on local stations. Not exactly payola, but propaganda for sure.

9. Karen Ryan.

This may not exactly be payola, but it's certainly propaganda. The Bush administration produced video news releases--that aired on local channels as legit news stories--to boost support for health care and education pillages, uh, "reforms".

The "reporter" was a PR executive named Karen Ryan.

References articles in NYT and Columbia Journalism Review.

Edited to include Ryan's Latino counterpart, Alberto Garcia. From Information Clearing House: Faux Journalism is the White House's New Ally.
