Poll question: How Many Hours Of Main Stream Network News Do You Consume A Day?

I have been trending toward less and less MSM consumption. Used to put CNN of MSNBC on and listen the whole day. Now I turn it on if there is something I specifically want to watch. Watch Olberman pretty regularly. I love internet overseas sources and PBS. Just wondering if I was the only news junky out there.

I have to admit I am amazed at the DUers that can actually stand to monitor and report back on Fox News Shows. Haven't turned it on in years. Just too repulsive. Bite Me Murdoch.

1. What counts as "mainstream news"?

The only television news I watch is BBC World News; other than that, I get my news online from newspaper websites (mostly guardian.co.uk)

I'm talking the Major US network outlets, cable and regular.

4. See, that's part of the problem...

and a major reason why Americans tend to be, in general, poorly informed and mostly ignorant when it comes to what's going on in the world...watching the news on television is no substitute for reading it. Especially since TV news coverage tends to be somewhat selective, generally lacking in depth, and heavily slanted toward stories involving petty crime and celebrity scandal...

I still watch quite a bit for the "know your enemy" factor. But, I watch it jaded.

Most just tell their friend the next morning "Hey, I heard that they found WMD in (fill in the blank)!"

3. About 20 minutes. I like to see how corporate media

covers (or avoids covering) the news. It's mostly just morbid curiosity.

after the election I cut cable as I was disgusted by US news media.

with the exception of K. Olberman, MSM tried to bury the most important story of the century-- widespread election fraud in the U.S. I was so disgusted, I quit watching.

I do still listen to NPR when I'm on the road though.

12. The media follows the money - corporate bias.

Radio and television go in the direction of people watching. The only way to restore balance is tosupport shows that are more balanced; such as Keith Olbermann, Ed Schultz. We have to convince them its monetarily beneficial to promote unbiased or progressive view points. If we don't we give the media balance in continuity to the radical conservatives.

15. Yeah, Selective viewing of the few decent shows

does prove that there is an audience out there. Personally, I do not generally subscribe to the more conspiratorial "The Media Is Owned By X" and out to suppress the truth theories. There certainly is a high degree of corporate ad buying that greatly influences the programming choices.

However, I think that the right swing in the media generally reflects American consumption habits. As much as it bothers me, the country has become increasingly conservative over the years. I think that is reflected in the ratings.

Support of the better stuff tells both the networks and their sponsors that an audience exists. Frankly, it is just about the only leverage we have. Write all the letters you want, unless you are buying add time you are mainly filling some communications major intern's lonely hours.

18. No TV whatsoever; scraps of NPR, local paper --

I used to have NPR on all day, or whenever I could have it on. Now I sometimes turn it on while cooking or eating breakfast, but almost always have to to turn it off after five minutes. (Chimp comes on, or someone tells one of those big whoppers, or there's some dreadful NON-NEWS story that NPR used to relegate to weekends but now has on every day.)

I use the paper for local news; skim the headlines to see what they choose to cover and what they're ignoring.

But DU and other onlines sources are where I get my news now.

19. It must actually be kind of tough ducking the monkey

all day long. He gets more press than Scott Peterson AND Michael Jackson combined.

I run across him or one of his puppet masters/minions on a regular basis. Always disturbs me but I usually keep trudging on through. Probably bolt to chnge tha channel 30% of the time.

20. Now that you mention it...

He really IS on more often than he used to be. I remember when it was a nasty shock to hear his voice. It was almost as if he was being hidden. Now... he's on the radio (and I assume TV) every day. What's that all about?

Has microphone technology advanced to the point where they can let him out in public now? Maybe his cueing device is the latest model??

21. I think it is a result of his more polished delivery these days.

The handlers let him get on camera more often than they used to I think.
