New DU feature: The Greatest Page
Edited on Fri Feb-11-05 01:34 PM by Skinner
As Democratic Underground has grown larger and busier, it has become increasingly difficult to find the most interesting or noteworthy topics. With thousands of threads posted each day, it's virtually impossible to wade through them all to find the best ones. With this in mind, we have created a new function for the message board, which we call the Greatest Page. Now you can easily find the Latest and Greatest discussion topics on the Democratic Underground message board. (Get it?)

The Greatest Page lists discussion topics which have been recommended by DU members. Topics can be recommended for 24 hours after they are first posted on our message board. The Greatest page shows topics that have received at least two recommendations, and topics remain on the page for 48 hours. To recommend a topic, click the link on the post that says "Recommend Topic for Greatest Page." Members are unable to recommend their own topics.

To go directly to the Greatest Page, click this link:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=greatest_threads

You can also access the Greatest Page by clicking the "three thumbs-up" icon at the top of the forum Lobby and Latest pages. Or you can click the blue link at the top left corner of each page, which says "Lobby / Latest / Greatest".

We are very excited about this upgrade. We believe it will make it much easier for visitors to find the best stuff on DU. Enjoy!

Skinner
DU Admin

Please be aware that the DU administrators can easily track which members recommend which threads. Individuals who abuse this feature will lose the privilege of recommending topics.

5. Thanks! And a question/suggestion:
Is it possible to set it up so when the page loads the topics are sorted by those with the most votes? To be honest, I'm not sure this would be desirable, but then again, why not?

Thanks again,

This will help a lot. Usually I only go to LBN or GD for information--and I know I'm missing out on other interesting things in other forums but I only have so much time.

Great feature, thanks.

16. Great idea
DU has become my central clearing house for news. I don't even go to regular news sites directly any more. If anything interesting happens, someone points it out here, usually with a better source than I'd have found.

But it has become impossible to wade through the volume on LBN and even more impossible to search for the gem threads in other places. I've been trying to think of a suggestion on how to make it easier and better, but you came up with this before I came up with any good ideas.

One question: Will topics gradually scroll off the bottom of the page as they do off the homepage, or will they stay and eventually be archived as in regular forums?

After the topic's 48 hours are over, it is automatically removed.

19. I don't really like it
Sorry. I just think it makes DU feel competitive. I wish there were another way to filter out the more frivolous threads - maybe a sort that just shows News & Views forums, or something like that. The Greatest page is kind of making DU into a contest.

20. I understand your concern.
But personally I do not think it fundamentaly changes DU. If anyone does not wish to click on the Greatest Page, they are not required to do so.

All it does is provide a method to sort through all the stuff that gets posted here. Is it a perfect method? Of course it is not. But it has some value. And it is especially useful for people who only stop by occasionally, and do not have time to read through everything.

As for the frivolous threads, I don't really think it's a huge problem at the moment. Currently, I believe there are only three Lounge threads on the entire Greatest Page, and one of them (about Khephra) is likely of interest to a large number of people who don't often visit the Lounge.

23. May be more appropriate for "ask admin", but since there is a thread
1. How does this affect the "nominate for home page" nomination process?

2. Once an item is on the new "greatest" page, should we show further support and vote for the best of the best?

27. Answers.
1. The "nominate for homepage" process is the same. The only difference is that the link says "recommend for greatest page."

1. You are encouraged to vote for any thread you think is worthy. The right column lists threads by number of votes.

28. not sure that really answered the question-
still confused myself. Does clicking "nominate for greatest" also send a nomination for the homepage? If so, it seems the admins will be swamped with nominations to look thru for the homepage, for pages people merely think are good enough for the greatest page - which is a broader spectrum than the best of the best that go on the front page.

29. But we'd prefer to have a larger group of things to choose from.
Recommending for the greatest page automatically sends a nomination for the homepage. This is not a problem, because we actually want more nominations for the homepage. We haven't been receiving enough nominations, and I usually have to go looking for stuff myself.

The homepage nominations are checked by the admins, and we select what to put on the homepage.

24. How can you abuse the feature?
I first thought that more than 2 recommendations might be a better filter, and I notice that while there are a lot of posts up now, it doesn't seem like too many, so maybe just 2 is O.K.
I do notice that they are arranged by number of nominations, and so it would seem that there is a certain value to getting more than 2 nominations in order to get to be closer to the top of the page.
This makes it tempting to "pile on" and nominate a favored topic even though the topic is already on the page- for example I was surprised by some of the threads with only 2 nominations. Reordering the posts chronologically would eliminate that temptation, although perhaps defeating the ability to see what is the "greatest of the greatest".

Anyway, it increases the value of the forums about one thousand fold.
Thanks!

34. This is great! Can we post the "Take Action" list in a handy place?
I've begun posting a new"Take Action" list every few days with links to action alerts (petitions, sending letters to Congress, etc.) on important issues.

“CLEAR SKIES” UP FOR VOTE NEXT WEEK: URGE CONGRESS TO OPPOSE THIS AIR POLLUTORS' BONANZA

Dirty Secrets Behind the Misnamed "Clear Skies" Bill
Over 30,000 Environmental Defense activists have spoken out against the misnamed "Clear Skies" bill - an unprecedented rollback to our nation's clean air laws. Reintroduced by Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), the bill would make lasting, damaging changes to the Clean Air Act. A Senate Committee will consider "Clear Skies" next week - tell your senators and President Bush to support healthier air, not a smokescreen.

STOP BUSH’S BUDGET CUTS—2 ACTION ALERTS:

From the Democratic Party: Tell Bush to Take His Budget Back to the Drawing Board!

From Campaign for America’s Future: Tell Congress to Reject the Bush budget!

Tell Congress to reject Bush’s indecent budget proposal! Tell them that you don’t want your government to undercut schools in need, eliminate childcare assistance, keep college out of reach for qualified students, cut Medicaid and foodstamps, and more than double veterans’ co-pays for prescription drugs—all while giving tax cuts to millionaires and hiking the federal deficit to $1.4 trillion!
Please contact your representatives today and demand that they reject the Bush budget and realign America’s spending priorities to serve us all not just a privileged few.

DEFEND HARRY REID FROM GOP SMEAR MACHINE!

Republicans are again playing their tired old game of trying to demonize--in their words "Daschle-ize"--anyone who disagrees with them. This time they are calling newly elected Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid names just for taking principled stands against the administration's most extreme positions.
It's not going to work and a big reason for that is you. We need you and every American tired of the hypocrisy emanating from George Bush and his cronies at the RNC to stand with Harry by signing our new petition.

TELL YOUR SENATORS TO SUPPORT ACCESS TO BIRTH CONTROL & CONTRACEPTION:
While Republican leaders are fast-tracking a bill that would endanger young women’s health, familiy-planning supporters are promoting policies that will actually help women by preventing unintended pregnancy and reducing the need for abortion.
Urge your senators to focus on the issues on which we share common ground and become a cosponsor of the Prevention First Act today!

STOP ROLLBACKS OF OVERFISHING PROTECTION

One quarter of commercial fish in U.S. waters are overfished or in danger of being overfished. Populations of tuna, cod, skate and grouper are much smaller than decades ago. But the Bush Administration has proposed weakening standards that protect fisheries from overfishing - standards that are starting to help some fish make a comeback. With the seafood industry generating over 250,000 jobs and contributing billions to our nation's economy, healthy fisheries mean a healthy economy. Tell the U.S. government's lead fisheries official keep overfishing protections.

SUPPORT THE VOTER ACT: HR 533 (CONYERS & TUBBS-JONES)
Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) was proud to join in the challenge of Ohio's electors and to protest the numerous voting irregularities which shamed our country in the 2004 presidential election. Now is the time to pass legislation to make certain such abuses do not happen and every vote is counted in future elections. Election outcomes must be determined by voters, not politicians.

To achieve this goal, we call on every PDA activist to lobby their Congressional Representatives to support and/or cosponsor the VOTER Act (H.R. 533), introduced by Congressman John Conyers, Jr. and Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs-Jones. Send a letter to your representatives now!

PRESERVE THE INTEGRITY OF THE U.S. SENATE: SAVE THE FILIBUSTER

From Common Cause: The filibuster has a long history in the Senate of fending off actions supported by a bare majority, but deeply offensive to the minority. If an individual senator were to abuse the privilege of the filibuster, he or she could be over overridden by a super majority of 60 votes.

To remove a long-standing parliamentary maneuver to serve immediate partisan goals violates core democratic values and is an anathema to the Senate's long standing commitment to consensus and a bipartisan deliberative process... It is an abuse of power to strip the Senate minority of a tool designed to protect its rights – rights both parties have vociferously defended throughout the Senate’s history

We the undersigned call on the United States Senators not to support changing of long standing Senate filibuster rules to blatantly advance one party’s goals.

ASK CONGRESS FOR REAL SECURITY REFORMS—NOT A WAR ON IMMIGRANTS

From the ACLU: The United States is a nation of immigrants with a long, proud history of granting asylum to those fleeing from religious or political persecution. But "security reform" legislation introduced in Congress makes a mockery of that tradition with an outrageous requirement that would force many asylum seekers to get supporting evidence from the very governments they are fleeing. House Judiciary Committee Chairman, James Sensenbrenner (R-WI), has proposed a bill . This bill would allow officials to require people seeking asylum to get supporting evidence from the very governments they are fleeing. It would also impose federal control over the issuance of state drivers licenses, even if this violation of their own policies. Further, it would expand the PATRIOT Act to allow deportations of lawful permanent residents for providing non-violent, humanitarian support to organizations later labeled as "terrorist" by the government, even where such support was completely legal at the time it was provided.

Tell Congess to oppose H.R. 418, the REAL ID ACT of 2005:

38. One tweak suggestion.
Since the intent is to expose important threads, rather than being time based, would it be better to drop recommendations over time, but allow new recommendations to replace? In other words, the 1st poster's recommendation drops after "X" amount of time (FIFO), but a new poster would could add to the current total?

Or maybe that's the way it's working?
