Police foil Valentine's Day mass suicide
London Evening Standard
11 February 2005

The alleged ring-leader of a mass Valentine's Day suicide pact arranged on the internet has been arrested in the US.

Gerald Krien, 26, had apparently roped 32 people into the deal, including a mother who planned to kill her two children, police said.

The plan appeared to include using webcams and internet chatrooms to co-ordinate the suicides on February 14.

Detectives were tipped off about the pact by a Canadian woman who claimed she had intended to take part in the suicide but changed her mind when another participant talked about killing her children.

2. Legitimate or hoax???
Volunteers planned to log on on Valentine's Day and simultaneously commit suicide, police said.
...

Timothy Evinger, the Klamath County Sheriff in Oregon, said if the plan was not a hoax, the investigation could reveal that more than 32 people are involved.

"The scary part is with just a name and intent on the web, you can draw in people worldwide," he said.

"It doesn't surprise me that we could be just scratching the surface, the tip of the iceberg here."
