Just got an email from Sen. Bill Nelson

Dear Mrs. ________:

Thank you for contacting me to voice your opposition to President
Bush's proposal to reform Social Security with private investment accounts.

I am willing to consider ideas for bolstering retirement security, but remain opposed to taking money out of Social Security and risking it in the stock market. Social Security has always provided a guaranteed source of income for retirees. It represents a promise made to workers and retirees alike that must be honored. Florida alone is home to 3.2 million Social Security beneficiaries, including retirees, survivors, and people with disabilities.

I am awaiting the details of the President's proposal, but expect
that it will closely mirror the recommendations put forth in the 2001
President's Commission on Social Security. The main component of the
President's initiative allows workers to take a portion of their payroll tax and invest it in the stock market. There is also discussion of changing the way benefits are calculated, linking them to prices rather than earnings. Either way, benefits for future generations will be reduced.

Social Security does face challenges, as it has in the past, but can be strengthened and maintained with sensible, bipartisan reforms. Plans that call for borrowing trillions of dollars and increasing the deficit or slashing benefits are not acceptable. I am examining other proposals that would increase tax breaks for retirement savings so they could supplement Social Security, not replace it.

I appreciate hearing from you. Feel free to contact me in the
future."

Apparently, he won't support Social Security "personalization". But he is willing to work in a "bipartisan" manner. Isn't that doublespeak for "you're getting fucked"?!?

I'd be interested in seeing some of those proposals. I'm 50, and if I'm going to get shorted out in my SS, I need to know about it right now so I can figure out how to come up with some extra $$ to save.

Sometimes I don't know why I bother writing. Maybe it's just to aggravate them as much as they aggravate me.
