Gannon/Guckert was investigated by bloggers shortly after being named the #2 Conservative Idiot of the Week by DU just this last Sunday. His smarmy reply about "trying harder to be #1" just pissed off enough people to cause a backlash. I think the White House was caught off guard by this, because their standard damage control methods (e.g. scripted questions w/ scripted answers) just weren't there.
