OK, so he can't run for President because he's a party chairman.

My question is: suppose he DID want to run in '08, how long before the election would he have to resign from the DNC chair in order to run?

His wife's not giving up her practice.

Although as far as I know the last party chairman to eventually become President was George the 1st.

2. I doubt there are official rules

For whatever it is worth, Joe Trippi did say he believes Dean will run.

4. He's said more than once that he will not be a candidate in 2008.

He said it to the DNC voters whose support he was seeking for DNC chair.

I think he'll keep his word though I suppose it's possible he could be drafted.

5. No Law Or Party Regulation Forbids It, Sir

But it is customary that a Party chairman not contend for any office he does not already hold, and Gov. Dean has given his word to abide by this custom. He very likely would not have gotten the post if he had not.
