Bush's "abstience" program discussion on Flanders
It's on now! 7:38pm eastern. She's talking to a girl who is talking about this program and how she saw more teenagers her age getting pregnant after this. It's really interesting. Texas is the highest rating state with teenage pregnancies.

2. I heard her say Lubbock was highest in TX, not that TX was highest of all
Texas is ranked 46th, though, so that's not far from the bottom.

Nevada is the worst according to this: http://www.teenpregnancy.org/america/statisticsDisplay.asp?ID=3&sID=18

then AZ, NM, Mississsippi, TX

6. I'm so pissed abt this
because when adults lie to kids abt sex, its gonna be really hard for an adult to convince them of the facts. Instead they will get their info from pop culture which constantly lies about sex. Sex ed isnt abt pushing an agenda it's about presenting the facts and letting people decide what to do.

7. The thinking is, if the adults tell the truth
about the value of abstinence, and the kids listen, it's a home run. But how many kids listen realistically, especially with peer pressure, the dreck on the tube, etc. Now those same kids want to be out there doing what their friends do, but have no tools to help themselves out. Another example of the dumbing down of America but in this case, they're getting their subjects young. The results reflect how bad an idea this is, but who's taking notes?
BTW, welcome to DU, BT!:hi:

9. I agree
These people are silly if they think they're going to keep teens from having sex. Sex is always there and why not teach these kids the information they need to know? What if they have sex and get a disease and don't know about it until it's too late? It's very important to teach, not only abstience, but also about condom's, birth control, STD's, etc. You have to at least have the information available for them to learn. I'm glad the girl mentioned that there are website's out there for sex-ed so they have SOMEWHERE to go.

11. its not even that
even though peer pressure is big. If i tell you bullshit like 'HIV can be transmitted by saliva so dont go around kissing random people' or 'condoms fail almost 1/3 of the time' and you later find out through other channels (like any reputable medical-related publication) that I was lying to you, are you gonna believe me when I tell you something that is true??? Probably not. If you lie to kids and they find out you're lying, then you are immediately discredited and nothing else you have to say holds any merit with them. Its like when condi rice lies over and over, and eventually we simply dont believe her even though she might be saying something with a hint of truth.

Thanx for the welcome!!:headbang:

13. Love the correlation to Condi!
And yes, lies told when kids are young will make them suspicious of anything any part of the 'establishment' ever tells them again.
None of my biz, but I have to ask: sewing up bodies? :wtf: Can you say, "Six Feet Under" or are we talking "CSI"?

8. I once saw Joe Scabrorough talked about this
and he was talking about the survey of before and after the program and he had two people on there. One woman, of course, was for the program and going on about how the numbers were flawed and about how the program does work. Just listening to the young girl about her experience with it should tell you. Teens being afraid of where to go for health issues and coming to her for help. It's really awful. Adults are supposed to be those we can go to for advice and to learn from and even have friends and not be afraid of them. I think that's what's really sad is they're making these teens feel afraid and ashamed of themselves. It makes it hard for today's society when they're telling kids "sex is bad" when the media is saying "sex is popular." It would confuse me I know. So I'm glad I'm out of high school and went through all my schooling during the Clinton administration. *whew* I feel bad for these kids though.

10. Thanks, FA82. You're right, with
this kind of 'moral certitude' in place, I bet kids do get scared when something goes wrong, but then they have no one to turn to. The travesty, as you've highlighted for me, is that now kids are ashamed of themselves, their sex, bodies, etc. This is another way in which the U.S. seems to be going backward instead of forward. It's mind-boggling!

You just personified why this is such a rotten idea. And it's not just this admin, it's been going on forever. Lack of knowledge=lots of preventable situations.
Edited for clarity

16. What's even more frightening to me is AIDS
Edited on Sat Feb-12-05 09:52 PM by ultraist
Teenage pregnancy is certainly something we need to actively curtail but the thought that many of these kids are not well armed due to abstinence programs, may end up with AIDS, is horrible.

It's like the Pope's remark, that even a man infected with AIDS should not use a condom.

There is a new strain of HIV now too that develops into full blown AIDS in six months and is resistant to all existing treatments.

Since teen pregnancy has increased, it seems that teen AIDS must have also increased. Why are they not talking about this?

U.S. Teen AIDS Rates have increased. One-fourth of all new HIV cases in the United States occur in people under age 21.

WHY are they not focusing on the use of condoms and GIVING THEM OUT FOR FREE???
