This is actually most of the reason this last election became so personal to me. I have had more than one Conservative tell me how "I just don't get it", when voicing my opposition to the war, or "You wouldn't understand what it takes to protect the freedoms you take for granted."

Normally I follow this stupid assumption with, "I was discharged honorably from the military after 6 years of service, did YOU serve."

The answer is, in almost every case, no.

Neo-Conservatives like to think they have a far deeper understanding of the mechanisms of war than anyone who opposes it. Generally, their entire defense when those beliefs are questioned consists of a "you just wouldn't understand, you just don't get it" line of dismissive statements. When confronted with the reality that they are an "armchair general" who has no practical experience to back up their assertions, they do exactly what Bill O'Reilly did here. They make broad assumptions and ad-hominem attacks to deflect the criticism.

This caller could have been a wheelchair-bound Vietnam Vet for all Bill knows, yet he still has no problem holding up his own pathetic service record (or lack of) and telling the man that he isn't capable of understanding, let alone BEING on a level with Bill O'Reilly when it comes to bravery.

It's always the little men who have the most to prove, and Bill O'Reilly is one of the rights most pathetic examples.
