I hope not. I'd rather have Boxer or anybody else. She's a lightning rod and it smacks of nepotism. The other thing that prompted it is that everyone keeps throwing it around. Also, in SNL weekend update, Amy Poehler said that appearently Democrats are favoring Hillary in 2008. Which means that the Democrats are looking for new and creative ways to have their asses handed to them.

1. No. I really hope they don't.
As you said, Hillary has too much baggage, and she'll never win. My choices are either Bill Richardson or Wes Clark.

3. Ditto
I agree with you, both would be better prospects. Maybe even throw Ed Rendell into the mix.

The right-wing media will still try to find a way to portay Wes Clark as a commie/terrorist lovin hippie :D

I don't even get that.

4. I sure hope not -- she could lose all 50 states!!
Edited on Sun Feb-13-05 01:43 AM by moggie12
Forgive me if you've seen this before (I've posted this twice already in GDP) but these are five reasons I think Hillary would get 35% or less in the general election:

1) You think the GOP base was mobilized this past year??? Just run Hillary and we'll see what "mobilized" really means. The GOP will break all fund-raising records and the evangelicals and RW'ers will be crawling from their hospital beds to vote against her. Why, oh why, would we run someone with a 40% negative rating??!!!

2) Hillary set the universal health care effort back 30 years with that incredibly bureaucratic plan she and her policy wonks devised. All we'll see on TV throughout the campaign is shots of that Rube Goldberg-like chart they came up with.

3) She's not a Governor!! What has she ever managed or accomplished??? Other than #2, above, which was a disaster.

4) Remember Hillary's slap at stay-at-home moms? I foresee many GOP commercials with a cookie-baking mom who talks about how Hillary is too liberal for America.

5) The left doesn't like her because she's been tacking as hard as can to the right. The centrists don't like her because they know we're going to get creamed down South and in the Midwest with her. Who the heck wants her to run??

Didn't we learn with poor Kerry? Running Senators is murder. They can't point to concrete things they've done or a record of managing something. I like Hillary, but we will be committing electoral suicide if we choose her as our Presidential candidate.

6. I'm sorry - Hillary has her moments, but she blew her chance...
...by acting too much like a DINO in the Senate. Wouldn't even stand with Barbara Boxer when it came time to challenge the Ohio electors.

7. Oh, please no.
She's OK in New York, where she's got plenty of yuppies who think her DLC policies are just peachy.

She'd get stomped out here in workaday flyover country, and rightly so.

We need an economic populist, not a pro corporate, antilabor, pro globalism, anti union DLC type like Hillary Clinton.

18. Have you ever actually bothered to look at her voting record...
Or do you prefer to simply make up your opinions from thin air? Just curious. She had a 95% rating from the ADA in 2002, and 10% rating from the ACU in the same year. In this last year, she has voted with the ACU's positive ratings on one issue--killing the Medicare reform scam.

Anyway, to answer the original question, no, Hillary would never make it through the primaries.

their position with facts. Take a look at many of the responses on this thread.

because there's too much to worry about now.

Hillary's got an organization set up, but it's going to be a long three years before anyone starts campaigning for real.

My bet's on Corzine as a frontrunner after a few years as Governor of NJ.

Edited on Sun Feb-13-05 01:53 AM by BrklynLiberal
exactly what we are doing here. It is almost 4 years away. There is an awful lot that can happen by then. I do not think there is any chance that she will be the nominee, so we should not waste any energy, and thereby give the Repukes the satisfaction of being upset, at the idea of Hillary being the Dem nominee in 08.

You guys think the Republicans had dirty on Kerry?

Think how big her file is at the RNC HQ, because they've accused her of higher political ambitions since the day Bill Clinton was sworn in.

Carter, Clinton connected at a time when people no longer trusted Repubs (Nixon-Watergate, Bush I, broke "read my lips" promise, too elite, not in touch with regular Americans). Bush II is setting up like this too: Iraqi war, upcoming draft, deficit, failed SS reform, failed $700B medicare reform, Plame case, etc,...

25. Agree JI7
If she enters the primary, she wins the nomination.

Her candidacy will suck all the news and funds from every other candidate.

The cable stations will be on 24 hour Hillary watch. The other candidates will never get any press.

The DNC/DLC wanted Hillary, but that's all changing, now. Her recent crab stepping to the right might even stink up her chances of staying where she is, given the groundswell of passion and anger currently engaging the party.

26. You have to think in terms of who would vote for her....
And what will the right do to destroy her?

My thoughts: Even though we should be well beyond this, in the minds of both blue and red staters, she could be the first female president. Completely acceptable.

The GOP will of course try to tear her down personally and politically, and they will play the sex card. I hope they do the latter. That will piss off some female Bush voters.

We could appeal to many red state women who rebel against the male "establishment". They will try to bring her down against the Christian Reich as pro-abortion and pro-gay. This is where Dean can help re-frame the party message.

I am cautious about Hillary, but the central question is - Can she win?

I think she has an excellent shot, and I am struggling to think of a single female in the GOP that can match her experience and ideals. I think people will vote for her just because she could be the first female president. Hands down - no questions asked.

You have to pull your head out of the political toilet and think about people who didn't vote for Kerry because they didn't like Theresa Heinz. Can you picture President Hillary and First Man Bill?

Sure! Call me biased, but all the way. You bet.

I get nauseated when I think about voting and I always vote and I have never voted for a Republican (I think I've never voted for one, anyway)

The democracy is over and there is only one party, now.

You see them promoting the idea everywhere and just about every troll and DLC plant promotes it here.

Hopefully, with Dean at the helm, we'll have grown a spine by then and won't be so easily manipulated.

31. If they do
they'll probably do it for the right reasons: i.e. she has the votes.

Unlike the Repukes, who anointed the Idiot Dauphin in the proverbial smoke-filled room and made sure everybody got the memo (and moreover that everybody who didn't read the memo got slimed, like McCain), we have this odd anachronistic tradition called the primaries. This is a peculiar form of market research, where we test the ability of our candidates to attract voters by putting them before the voters. It's not perfect, because we pre-select by limiting it to voters who are disposed to like our candidates anyway, and that's how we tend to end up with everybody's second- or third-favorite candidate (Kerry) instead of a real firebreather (choose one: Dean, Clark, Kucinich).

Anyway, I have no doubt that in 2007-8 we'll do that again, and then get some actual evidence of how Sen. Clinton polls.

Until then, it's (a) a bit premature, and (b) a known winger talking point, so I'm gonna shut up about it.
