Anyone here watch SNL last night?
I thought the show was funny except for one thing. At one point, it looked like they were making fun of and promoting stereotypes of African Americans. It was the Black History segment and they kept showing this guy who said "HELL NAH!" to things that were considered "white" such as eating sushi, skydiving, and "direct deposit". I just thought the show could've gone without that segment because I don't think it's right for them to make fun of Black History Month.

1. Never. They stink.

MADTV is funnier.

As a Second City Alumni, I feel qualified to make this pronouncement.

2. The only segment thought funny was "direct deposit". His distrust came
through quite convincingly. the "sushi" was a dud, IMO. I didn't see the "skydiving" segment. Went to sleep on most of the show.

SNL makes fun of everything. No sacred cows.

4. SNL has ALWAYS...
...made fun of African Americans!

"Kill my landlord, kill my landlord!"

"Base-a-ball been berry berry good to ME!"

They make fun of white people too.

It’s obvious SNL is prejudice. I believe they are really run by Hawaiians, they never make fun of them.

I think its what you do when you cant think of anything funny.
But its not funny to anyone but closet racists. Most of whom would never think that of themselves or admit it to others.

8. My take on last night's SNL- they dropped the ball and enraged fundies
Edited on Sun Feb-13-05 10:03 AM by IanDB1
The opening segment was a press conference with Kim Jung Il of North Korea.

He was bragging about his nukes, etc. etc. And then he took questions from the North Korean press.

The questions were all something like this:

"Great leader, you are the most brilliant star in the universe, please tell me how you will use your genius to crush the Yankee imperialist dogs in the east."

THEY MISSED THE OBVIOUS JOKE THAT WOULD HAVE MADE THE WHOLE BIT!

They SHOULD have had someone stand up and say, "Jeff Gannon, from Talon News. Great and handsome leader, now that you have nuclear weapons, how do you intend to work with the American Democrats who have a warped sens of reality?"

Also, while I was flipping through the channels I stumbled upon Fox News.

They showed an SNL clip from a bit where one of the cast members played Prince Charles and made-out with a man dressed as Camilla.

And it wasn't a "normal" man-on-man kiss. It was played for laughs (obviously) and was done in a very comic way. And you could see actual tongue.

Now, I have no problem with it.

But they showed it on FOX NEWS.

The comment was, "... and that was the HIGHLIGHT of the show. Ha ha!"

We all know what is next, right?

Parents Television Council is going to complain to the FCC and claim that they were all awake until 12:30 at night knowing they had to get up early for church the next day and were highly offended by a television show know for trying to offend.

After all, didn't they also complain when Jon Lovitz dressed as Satan looked into the camera and said, "Worship me!"

12. I thought Monkeys throwing Poop was funny, because of Sean Connery
That is just a dead-on Sean Connery impersonation.

"This isn't that show where a monkey throws poop at celebreties, is it?"

"No, no. We just want to talk to you about sailing."

"Then what's that monkey doing there? Is he going to throw poop at me?"

"No, he's not going to throw poop."

"Alright then, I'll sit down. But the monkey better not throw poop at me!"

"No, he won't throw poop at you. I promise."

I thought that would be a dreadful bit, but the Connery impression saved it, though just by a whisker.

On edit:

It wasn't a monkey, though.

25. It's too bad they picked the celebrity that absolutley anyone
can convincingly impersonate. Oh well. That doesn't mean a Connery impersonation isn't funny.

Tina Fey never misses an opportunity to slam Bush and the Republicans.
She did last night, too. I just cannot remember the specific jokes.

With Condi war-mongering was the highlight.

Amy got a good one in about "Howard Dean has been elected head of the Democratic Party. No word on who will be the neck." LOL! :)

18. SNL 'used' to be funny. It is now an embarrassment to itself.
Even the political humor falls flat. Time to retire the dinosaur.

21. i watched SNL when SNL was SNL (70s)
it's become utterly unwatchable. last night was esp. bad.

monkeys throwing poop
gays in space
the fat rapper (FART jokes, how original)
annoying subway entertainers (how many outside of NYC would 'get' half of that lame, over-long turd?)

the UPDATE can still throw some zingers but they should tell us during the opening credits when UPDATE is going to start. the odds of missing anything remotely funny are increasingly slim.

i keep giving it a chance, i keep getting let DOWN.

22. I musta been stoned
Edited on Sun Feb-13-05 11:43 AM by Atman
I laughed my ass off at the monkeys bit. It was just so goddamm stupid; imagine them doing it in a British accent. Was this really much different than "That parrot is dead!" "No, he's only sleeping!"? (On edit): And Justine - er, Justin Bateman was one of the first guests in memory that actually seemed to have memorized his lines and actually played a character, instead of just reading of the cue cards over the other player's shoulder. His host character was fantastic. But then I think...okay, here I am laughing at poop jokes. Is this what we've become?! George Bush has lowered the standards for everything! LOL! But seriously...

Kelly Clarkson...whussup with that? Again, was I just really stoned, or was she hot? And the vocals were so totally un-American Idol...if she was really singing (it sure seemed to be real), she kicked ass, even though the song wasn't my cup of tea.

26. Yes, the rest of the bits sucked. Especially the farting rapper.
I'm still pissed that they missed the opportunity to put Jeff Gannon in the opening bit with Kim Jung Il.

But I think we might want to use that bit to frame the debate.

As for the thing with the monkey (OK, chimp) the funny part wasn't the poop.

The funny part was Sean Connery taking himself so seriously, being so paranoid yet gullible. He just wanted so badly to have the opportunity to talk about his yacht.

And then when he got poop on him and started laughing and throwing it back, that just ruined it.

I've never seen a better Sean Connery impersonation than the ones they do on SNL. I love Celebrity Jeopardy. "Ah, the game is afoot, Trebeck! I'll take The Rapists for 200."

"No, that's Therapists."

28. Agreed
"And then when he got poop on him and started laughing and throwing it back, that just ruined it."

It was completely out of the Connery character. He had just finished saying that if he had moneky poop thrown on him that he'd kick some serious ass...and then just laughed about it when it happened. The writers just seem to miss some of the most obvious stuff.

I didn't see much else that I really laughed at, though. SNL doesn't get cancelled just because that hour of Saturday night is impossible to fill. Nothing ever tried does better, so they settle with dreck, because people watch SNL by default now. They know there is nothing else worth even checking the other channels for.

And for the record, I thought those segments were hilarious. :D
