1. Hardly a surprise here.
Though, I thought they might Diebold the election, but that'd be too friggin' obvious.

3. Guess again. Allawi had a surprise gain in the 2-week-long vote count
As I recall:

Early reports had 8 million ballots, about the same as the "official" count of 8.5 million. The Shia-dominated ticket had more than 3 million votes. The Allawi list had less than 600,000 votes.

Now, with 400 ballot boxes reportedly thrown out and 300 other ballot boxes recounted, we see tha Allawi more than doubled his count while the Shia-dominated list gained only about 33%.

Shia parties win Iraqi election

A Shia-dominated coalition won nearly half of the 8.5 million votes cast in Iraq's election, poll officials say.

The Kurdish coalition came second with nearly 2.2 million votes, while the party of interim PM Iyad Allawi was third with nearly 1.2 million.

9. it's a lot easier to double a 600,00 vote count...
than it is to increase a 3-million vote count by 33%...

really-
do the math.

nothing nefarious here...if they were faking the vote for allawi, he would have won not finished a distant third.

:eyes:

Iraqi Finance Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi, a Shi'ite official who is a leading contender to be the next prime minister, flashes the victory sign after the results of the country's national elections were announced in Baghdad, February 13, 2005. The United Iraqi Alliance, which won Iraq (news - web sites)'s first election since Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s overthrow, insists that one of its candidates -- probably Mahdi-- be appointed as prime minister.
