FCC Says Shock-Jock Stern Qualifies as Newsman
Tue Sep 9,10:11 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Even though shock jock Howard Stern's radio and television show features scantily clad women and raunchy chatter, regulators on Tuesday ruled it a news program, exempting it from equal time rules on political coverage.

The staff decision by the Federal Communications Commission (news - web sites) opens the way for the show to book two of the sexier candidates for California governor: Hollywood he-man Arnold Schwarzenegger (news) and porn-star Mary Carey.

A media watchdog group immediately denounced the FCC (news - web sites) ruling, calling it a reversal of decades of U.S. media regulation designed to promote fairness in election coverage and an informed public debate on government policy.

Executives at Infinity Broadcasting, which owns Stern's home station WXRK in New York, had been concerned that an appearance by either candidate would have required the show to make time for the more than 130 candidates running in California's hectic Oct. 7 election.

We need to IMMEDIATELY MAKE A STINK ABOUT THIS. Anyone on action committees needs to see what challenges or injunctions we can get to block this. THIS IS BULLSHIT!!!!

On edit: Please help me keep this kicked for the morning crowd

1. Boycott Stern? That's easy enough
I have never listened to or watched that scumbag anyway. He is vile and I do not understand why he is so popular. His exploitation of women turns my stomach.:puke:

2. I already do
I somehow fail to see the talent in asking women to take off their clothes.

What's up with the mention of the fairness doctrine? I thought that was long dead.

Oh, and hey, NSMA! :hi:

4. HI there! Fairness doctrine and equal time provisions are two
different things. THat is why television stations pulled Arnold's movies. This decision is PURE DIRTY POOL!

10. The fairness doctrine provided for time for opposing opinions to
editorializing. Teh Equal time provisions are an entirely different code and pertain to the treatment of candidates during an election.

3. If Hannity and Colmes or Crossfire
are considered news programs, Howard Stern should be as well.

5. I don't get Stern
Edited on Wed Sep-10-03 01:58 AM by Ein
but have listened to him on internet radio.

On one show a caller called in saying Stern praises Bush too much, and spewed invective. Stern said that he doesn't give a sweeping endorsement to Bush, and that he isn't responsible and (actual quote)

"I voted for Al Gore"

Why would you boycott him? Arnold doesn't stand a chance... and porn star. What about Jay Leno, has he had a candidate on every night?

How could the equal time law truely apply with over 100 candidates?

7. I forgot about that
The Tonight Show is a News Program but not a radio show that actually does the news at the end of its broadcast?

6. NO problem!
I have boycotted him for years-
He is disgusting.
The perfect icon for the stupidity and coarseness
of the 'murikkkan sheeple.
The number of people in this country who find him entertaining
proves the observation by the ancient philosopher that you can
estimate the fall of a civilization by what it considers to be entertainment.
He appeals to the lowest common denominator and by the looks
of our country and his audience, we are clearly falling.
He creeps me out beyond words.

9. Chill Out, dude!...
Ar-nuld on Stern's show will probably result in him sticking his foot so far in his mouth it will come out of his ass. It will do him far more harm as they will probably compare misogynist notes.

So Schwarzie is a favorite of the 12-19 crowd, just like the movie-ticket buying public.

And by the way, California is a Spanish word and is pronounced beautifully by Bustamate...

11. Let's
get the DU Lounge declared a news program. It's at least as edifying as Howard Stern.

I don't listen to Howard Stern as it is. But I'm not opposed to sending e-mail and snail mail to the local station that carries his program.
