So does anybody else think that after "recounting" the votes in Iraq
Edited on Sun Feb-13-05 03:03 PM by Walt Starr
that the Shiites are going to get pissed enough that the violence is going to start getting worse?

Remember, the Shiites have been relatively calm in hopes of the election and all predictions had them picking up well beyond a 50% majority, yet after what looked like a slam dunk Shiite majority started being "recounted", they are now less than 50%.

I don't know if Sistani will even be able to contain the potential for violence. The "election" may have just made things worse.

1. I don't think the election is going to really mean shit...
every one knows who is really running the country.

2. I'm Sure John Kerry Will Fight For Every Vote.
Just like in the USA.

9. Why bring up Kerry?
Waste of space here. It is the shrub where we should focus the election. Forget Kerry unless you don't like him. He had nothing to do with the election and should not bear the burden.

3. No ... New idea the elections were perfect
We have to admit we were wrong. * was right. Freedom is spreading like
a prairie fire. So let us get the hell out of Dodge. Maybe we could go and
kill bin Laden? Just an idea.

4. In my understanding, if they got over 50%, they would be able to set up
their own government with little cooperation from other groups.

That is the perfect reason to 'recount' a couple times until the number is low enough.

5. The Shi'a got over 60%.
The religious slate got 47.5 or so, at least the only one we've actually heard much about. The fairly secular one that made the MSM got what, 13%? 14%?

If they merged in all the little itsy-bitsy Shi'a parties, they'd probably be able to form a coalition without any Sunnis at all. As it is, they'll probably include the Kurds.

7. Here's what I guessed Friday...
Bush may be trying to set up a scenario where religious Shia are the largest contingent, but "everyone else" is the majority.

And if so, I don't think that will go over big with the Shia.

IOW: BushCo "recounted" a scenario where a US presence was necessary to prevent outright Fundamentalist Shia rule.

8. I think that Iraq
will rapidly return to being three distinct political/cultural entities. I think that there will be significant bloodshed involved. There is good reason to think that the administration, when planning to invade Iraq in early 2001, anticipated a divide & conquer strategy.
